Daniels: 'He's got to be here'

ESPN.com news services
The Mike Shanahan era has begun at Commanders Park and Washington's players are buying in -- except for $100 million defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, who again was a no-show for the team's second voluntary minicamp this weekend.
And some of his teammates aren't happy about it. Haynesworth is upset about the team's looming change to a 3-4 defense under new defensive coordinator Jim Haslett from the 4-3 that the team used in 2009.

“

It says this is voluntary, but for us, what we went through last season after a 4-12 season, it's mandatory.

” -- Phillip Daniels, on the Commanders' recent minicamp, to The Washington Post
"There is no room for negotiation at 4-12," defensive end Phillip Daniels told The Washington Post, making reference to the team's record in 2009. "I'm here, [London] Fletcher's here, everybody's here," Daniels added. "He's got to understand that. We need him to come here, be here and show these young guys that the veterans have bought in and that we want to win games."
Haynesworth, a two-time All-Pro defensive tackle, would prefer to be traded. He has also irked Shanahan by working with his own trainer and staying away from all of the team's voluntary offseason conditioning sessions.
Haynesworth, who has been paid $32 million of the $41 million guaranteed in the contract he signed with the Commanders last year, stayed away from the first minicamp last month in hopes the team would trade him, possibly for draft picks. However, on the second day of the NFL draft, Shanahan announced that "Haynesworth will not be traded."
Haynesworth's first year with Washington was far from harmonious. He criticized Greg Blache, the team's defensive coordinator last season after being sent home from a practice for disciplanary reasons. He played in 12 of 16 games and recorded 37 tackles and four sacks.
Daniels told The Post that he's been told that Haynesworth will be allowed to play on the end and won't have to be the team's starting nose-tackle, which is an important although unglamorous line position in the 3-4.

"From what I'm told, he can play the end spot," Daniels told The Post. "I've called him and told him that. The thing is, we have 100 percent participation if he is here. It's now 99. He's got to be here."
However, in April, a team source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that Haynesworth was penciled in to be the team's starting nose tackle.
Offensive lineman Mike Williams said that, like it or not, Haynesworth has to realize he's a leader on the team.
"Albert carries so much weight with him, there's a lot of young guys that look up to him," Williams told the Post. "But you got to be here. ... He's a grown man. With that comes responsibility. I think a lot of people say, 'Hey, you have a responsibility to this team.' There are a lot of other guys here that would like to be home. But obviously not, because there is a responsibility we have to this team."
Daniels told The Post, that although these minicamps have been voluntary, the Commanders' last-place finish last season dictates that attendance should be mandatory.
"It says this is voluntary, but for us, what we went through last season after a 4-12 season, it's mandatory," Daniels said. "He should definitely be here. And it's a shame he's not."
Haynesworth will be required to attend the mandatory minicamp next month.

You would think after a 32 mil payout he would suck it up for a while and see how it goes.

Dan Snyder's neck-and-neck with Al Davis for most frivolous and unproductive spending in the past few years.

Albert is his big fat jiggly trophy.

Just wanted to drop in and say that I have read a lot of the comments on here and some of the fans on here really do believe everything that they read. Articles tend to leave things out and when you talk general stuff sometimes it comes out a different way. I am not upset with Albert at all but the whole team would love for him to be here with us getting ready to win a championship. When a reporter asks a question, we answer it but sometimes that answer is twisted in so many ways. None of the good stuff you say ever comes out in the article. They chop your words as they see fit and in the best way to sell papers or go public. Albert is a key part of the team and he will be ready to go. Just wanted to clear things up a little for the people who believe everything that writers put out there. Like the old saying goes: Believe none of what you hear and only half of what you see.

That's a direct quote from Phillip Daniels on a thread he started on ES:

Hello Skins Fans, This Is PD

But lets not forget, teammates rarely call each other out. The mere fact that he even mentioned that al should be there tells you everything you need to know. Just because they don't say so in the press, don't for a second believe the players aren't pissed because he's not there. A blind man could see it.

And lets not kid ourselves either. This guy signed a whopper contract and came into camp last year in questionable shape. What makes ANYONE thing this year is going to be any different? The guy would damn near pass out from fatigue on the field after just a few plays.

Keep telling yourself there isn't a problem. Its what Commander nation does best.

First, people are saying Daniels DID call out Haynesworth in the press lol. So your comment doesn't apply here.

Second, Daniels HIMSELF felt that his stance and views on Haynesworth were so distorted and taken out of context in the media that he actually started a thread to inform the fans that what's being reported is not an accurate reflection of his words or his views.

Now, ask yourself: Whose words should I put more stock in concerning how Haynesworth is really viewed...Phillip Daniels talking to me directly, or an anonymous Cowboys fan? lol...Hmm, what a tough choice to make. Phillip Daniels...or you.

But you just keep telling yourself that Daniels' unfiltered words hold zero value and should be ignored...because YOU know how he really feels.

This guy is a dirtbag pig. I hated the guy after he stomped on Gurode and hated him even more when he got the 100 million contract. Now theis makes him worse than T.O. IMO. The guy is a pig for essentially stealing money and throwing a hissy fit when he was expected to at least show up.

This is what they get for spending the kinda of money on him, That was the reason everybody laughed at them when they signed him. Every team KNEW this was going to happen. Here we are have a better player (Rat) better production and alot less finanically:laugh2:

So what was inaccurate about Daniels wanting Albert Haynesworth to be in camp?

No one put a gun to Daniels' head. He said what he said. He accurately reflected his feelings about Haynesworth skipping voluntary workouts.

I don't care if he (Daniels) talked about how much charity work Haynesworth does. If Fat Albert should be in camp, and he's not, that's newsworthy as far as sports and the timeliness of his absence.

You're telling me that of the entire roster of the Washington Commanders, only Albert Haynesworth isn't participating in off season workouts, AND he's the one who was supposed to bring the X-Box?

When I think of the Commanders "getting ready to win a championship" I think of longshoremen in New York getting ready to unload the Titanic.

Any day now...

Haynesworth is another matter. The Commanders have paid the two-time All Pro $32 million in guaranteed money the past 15 months, but he skipped two voluntary minicamps this spring and stayed away from all of the team's offseason workouts mainly because he's unhappy with the switch to a 3-4 defense.

"Yeah, I'm disappointed he's not here. Absolutely," Snyder said. "We're expecting our players to lead by example, and we're expecting our players to understand that they're Commanders and they need to be there."

No, you keep telling yourself that the 100 million dollar man, with a history of coming into camp out of shape, having a new coach, and a completely new defensive scheme being put in place, coming off a 4-12 season ISN'T a problem.

Keep telling yourself that nobody at Commanders park is concerned. Keep telling yourself that none of the other players think its BS that he's not there.

I couldn't care less what Phillip Daniels thinks. He was doing damage control. And rightly so.
