We had a thread about it in the political zone, because most of us in there have served at one time or another.

It is a very good series so far, still not in the league of band of brothers IMO, but pretty good anyways.

It was a decent book, and so far the series is OK, but it's not even close to Band of Brothers IMO.

ITs pretty good.

Band of brothers and most world war II stuff comes off as magical because it was so long ago.

where as the guys in generation kill are guys like us, our age. Its tough to compare the two. FOr me anyway.

Not a big fan of Band of Brothers. Well-made and interesting, but for me, ramps up the forced poignancy a bit too much.

I've never been in the military, born in 74, but I love this series. Didn't care much for Band of Brothers... maybe I'm just a David Simon fan, because every show this guy makes is absolute gold...

Band of Brothers was absolute magic. For a WW2 historian like myself, shows like that and Saving Private Ryan are solid gold. Some of you youngsters never have gotten what it is us older guys find so fascinating about WW2. Thats ok. But I would urge you to read the book BOB was based upon and you will better understand.

Don't pass judgement on me just yet.. I only watched a couple episodes of BOB... and it bored me. May not have given it a proper chance, but we have the whole series on DVD now... maybe I'll watch it and see if it grabs me.

I have much respect for anyone who's served in time of war and out of it, I don't have the discipline for it.

I'd consider both Band of Brothers and Generation Kill to be "easy reads". If you get a chance, I'd highly recommend trying to read both.

I don't consider myself a WW2 historian but by far WWII movies are my fav. Just something different about the era and that war that I love movies and shows about it.

You need to keep watching. It starts out slow and picks up steam.

I'm very interested in WWII, but neither Band of Brothers nor Saving Private Ryan did much for me. A very interesting account is The Rise and Fall of The Third Reich by William Shirer. Very long, and the author indulges in a tad too much editorializing at times, but very good nonetheless.

BoB and SPR both were more about the grunts at the sharp end of the stick. I have talked with many vets and they both consider those two the very best at showing what WW2 was like. I was incredibly lucky enough to talk to Dick Winters (Major Winters of BOB) a few years ago right after it came out and he thought it was a great telling of their story. The generations brought up with MTV and after are so used to things that move so fast that stories that have actual conversations in it and do not pander to the lowest common denominator is not something they get. Sad for them.
