So my parents are renting a house after theirs burned down out in Bastrop. The new house can't get DSL or Cable. The house had dish network for internet but it is SLOOOOOW (they had time warner cable at the old house). They upgraded to the $100 plan at Dish but that's still only like 1mbit speed with huge latency. The internet there reallllllly sucks. Dish even had the balls to complain to my parents for using too much bandwidth (netflix). Pages barely load and ythey want to gripe about using bandwidth??????????

So...does anyone know of or have any experience with other forms of internet connections? There has to be something better than dish (hughes).

Try Clear. It's probably your best option out there.

And is Bastrop the town with the smiley face on the water tower?

Maybe...there are several towers I've seen with smiley faces. Not sure if that's just a Bastrop thing or not.

I am currently using Clear Wireless. Clear is one of the best isp's I have ever had. Signed a two year contract, purchased the modem outright for $20.00, got the second month free. Going on seven months and have had no problems.

I would recommend Clear.com. :)

What's your download speed at speedtest.net?

Laptop or PC? Bought A MiFi at Best Buy. Lets me have access on the go,carry it in your pocket.
Go to a AT&T store and ask them what they can do for you and for how much.
I feel for your folks.Been there and done that.13 years worth. Finally sold out and moved to Weatherford. People ask why there? I just say,for Braums ice cream to keep it simple.

Speedtest and Pingtest graded my connection at a B.

Ran the speed test a few times. The best I got was; 9.65mbps download, 1.42mbps upload and it pinged at 114. The national average grade was a C, and the global average was a B.

That's not bad. I wonder if the trees around the house will hurt it.

Good question. When I signed up with Clear, they gave me a 30 day cancellation period with no penalty. It is 15 days now. You wouldn't lose anything in checking it out.

Look for a wireless type company like clear. My parents live in the sticks and they had a company in their area come in and set up they got a major boost over satellite when they migrated.

It can be a chain or a local/regional company

Something like this

I've used the verizon 4g MiFi and that's pretty good. Only like $50 a year.

Never checked the speed, and only used it for browsing, but was reliable and seemed quick.

I will have to check this out. I am in for $35.00 a month with AT&T,That was so much cheaper than Dish Sat. I jumped on it.

Well...the thing you put in the USB to receive internet is like 50, and it's a $100 2-year contract if I recall. Still worth it if that's the deal you can get.
