Historic loss at home for Jones era

The 47-9 drubbing at home for the Cowboys was worst since we fell to Minnesota on Nov 13, 1988, just months before Jethro bought the team.

The 167 points allowed by the Cowboys in their last 4 home games are the 3rd most ever in a span of 4 home games according to Sportradar. Only the 1948 Giants(177 points) and the 1972 Oilers ( 176) allowed more.

Although this is the worst in terms of points, the GB game was the most impactful due to being a WC game, heavy favorites and the drubbing was just as bad. Derailed the train into a ditch that they have not even now pulled themselves out of.

Sweeping that game under the rug and not learning from it has resulted in the circumstances that we are now witnessing. Jerry and MM deserve each other.

I vaguely recall that Minnesota game. I think it was Sunday night when those didn’t happen every week. I could be wrong.

It was a tough time and I remember feeling bad for Coach, my idol and hero…..but I also desperately wanted the UCLA QB.

yes, it was on Sunday night. Great memory. SNF begun in 1987 on ESPN and didn’t become a weekly broadcast until 1990 when it shared early part of season with TNT. It wasn’t until 2006 season NBC took over full time.

Glad you brought this up. Very interesting read. I’d forgotten all of the details. I think what I recall most is not liking Theisman doing the games.

Now that the idea of ‘rooting against your own team’ is a current topic, I’ll go a little further…..

I’ll test my memory and not look things up, so I may not have it perfectly accurate, but probably close.

There was a game in Cleveland about a month after that Minnesota game. Roger Ruzek kicked a late FG that would have won it, but there was a penalty that negated it. I want to say it was on Randy White, but that part is very cloudy. Anyway, no FG and Dallas loses.

Point here….compare the “thrill” of that victory vs having Tony Mandarich instead of Troy Aikman. So, can’t sit there and openly hope your team loses, but sometimes there’s a greater good. Maybe sort of like it sucks to have to discipline your child, but it’s done for good reason.
