Honest question/answer: What's the point of 99% of these Bowl Games?

So I turn it on to BYU vs UTEP....half empty stadium and two teams who aren't playing for anything in the New Mexico bowl.

Seriously, what is the point of a bowl game like this?? Every bowl game besides the nat champ game is a glorified exhibition game. I mean, are you SUPPOSED to get excited by a game with no real outcome?

There's not one, other than to bring some tourism money to the host city.

And there's nothing about a playoff that would prevent 50 average schools from still doing this and letting Albequerque fill up half their stadium for those few fans who do care.

It is good for the programs in terms of recruitment for one, when you get national coverage it can do nothing but help. As a fan of football I enjoy watching the games so I have no problem with all these bowl games and look forward to seeing them. Tomorrow night you have 2 good matchups with Louisville vs. Southern Miss as well as Utah vs Boise St.

The players just want the bag of goodies that they all get.

For many it will be their last football game they will ever play.

They should cut out a bunch of them so that making a bowl game is actually an accomplishment not a reward for going 6-6.

As a football fan knowing the season is fast coming to a close I'm soaking in as much as I can before it is gone.

I think they are there for the 99% of kids that aren't going pro in football. It's still fun to culminate your year in a bowl game even if it isn't a big deal to people that wouldn't be interested in your program to begin with.

I say let's do a march madness type of deal, and have a 64 team tourney with each team required to play one game every two days. Let's get extreme here. At least they'll definitely be prepared for the NFL... :)

The thing is a lot of the schools lose money at the smaller bowls by the time they pay for travel, hotel and all the other expense most teams lose money. Because they are in a minor bowl with a small payout and it is half empty

Also helps give these teams some national exposure to help with recruiting

There is the money agenda.
There is the recruitment situation.
There is the some players last college game or football game.

Many different things that have been covered.

Same thing that could happen in a playoff system.

However I will say, I do enjoy the bowl games for the most part.

It is also a chance for some to see some other teams play that they might normally not see.

Depending on where you live, depending on the location of the schools, depending on the size of the schools and other factors...sometimes you don't get to see some of those schools/teams play very often on your own TV (unless you have the College FB version of the NFL Ticket).

So it is nice to see some of those teams.

You also have the scenario where you might see a couple of teams play each other that would normally never play each other.

You also have the magic of the possible upsets that are always fun to watch and almost always happen a few times during the bowl games...you also get that in the playoffs in college basketball.

Plus as others have said...it is the last change of the year to see college football.
