Houston Cougars invited by Big East

The Big East has extended an invitation to the University of Houston to join as a full-league member according to a report by The Houston Chronicle. The invitation was reported to have been offered following a conference call of university presidents and chancellors of the Big East discussing expansion Monday evening.

The report suggests that the time frame for Houston to leave Conference USA and join the Big East would be completed in 2013, which would mean one more season in Conference USA for the Cougars if they were to accept the invitation, which seems likely. Conference USA requires one calendar year before a team may move out of the conference and the withdraw fee is $500,000 plus the price of any lost television revenue projected for the five-years following the change.

The Big East is looking to move to a 12-team conference and would need six new members to join after the departures of Pittsburgh and Syracuse (ACC) and TCU (Big 12). TCU accepted an invitation to the Big 12 last week despite previously accepting an invite to the Big East. TCU will not be held to the 27-month waiting period that Pittsburgh and Syracuse are being tied to at the moment.

Sure. Why not. Because nothing says Big EAST like Houston, TX.

No more than being in Conference USA where teams are spread across the country.

This is a big opportunity for Houston

I use to love the Coogs when Yeoman (not sure I spelled that right) was their coach...then the coach came along that tried to score 100 every game (Jenkins?) & I lost interest. Never got it back but anything would be better than where they are. As it is not many care about them. Whatever stirs interest.

Jack Pardee came in along with Mouse Davis then June Jones to run the run and shoot. I liked Bill Yeoman as well but his Veer option offense was outdated and the Cougars where going no where fast, as more and more college teams turned to passing. I was never a fan of the run and shoot but I will say when a college team is at a disadvantage in terms of recuriting with the bigger teams then you need something out of the norm to compete Houston brought that in the run and shoot

Big East is trying to save their conference.

The 4 superconferences are coming. Hopefully it will eliminate the BCS and change the landscape of college football.

I remember watching Coach Yeoman's tv show when I was a kid...he was why I liked them. When he left..got fired...whatever happened I just lost interest & went on to following other college teams. So I guess in retrospect I was a fairweather Coogs fan. And right now here I am close to Houston & I can't name their HC...who they play..etc. I would like to see that program flourish because Houston is too big to not care about their hometown school. I would be interested again if they got some national attention.

Coach Yeoman is a very fine man. I have had the pleasure of meeting him and as a matter of fact his son who is a doctor did surgery on my knee.

As far as how his coaching career ended he retired in 89 after 24 years as the HC of the cougars.

As for todays cougars Kevin Sumlin is the HC and has done a good job. Currently Houston is 6-0 on the season

This is both good and might be bad for Houston. The new $10M exit fee just makes it that much worse.

Maybe so but I think more good than bad will come out of it not just in terms of the football program at U of H but the basketball program

I would hope so. Really nothing to brag about in recent years not since Phi Slama Jama lead by Hakeem "The Dream" Olajuwon and Clyde The Glide" Drexler

Heck of a team Guy V. Lewis put together

I think they will be an all sports member.

I think boise state and the military academies would be just football members if they came to the big east.

As a Boise fan, I hope to be seeing Houston every year as part of the Western division of the Big East. But, with Boise's luck the day that they accept the Big East invite, WVU, Cinci, and Louisville will all announce that they are joing the Big -12. :bang2:
