I admit I’m not much of a basketball fan but I figured some of you Texas natives might have an answer. His teams have been awful for like a decade. How does he not lose his job? Seems like being a head coach in DFW is a job for life regardless of success.

He's still a top-10 coach, IMO.

The talent on the Mavs has been sub-par since their championship run.

They'll have a pretty elite core going forward though, so the next two years will probably determine Carlisle's fate.

Mark begged him to lose games.
He has the job as long as he wants it.

Once the Doncic and Porzingus train gets rolling he will have job security

He already does.
He is part of the brain trust in DAL with Cuban and Nelson and for the past decade Dirk.
They operate together much like the Cowboys have done collectively making key decisions.

Unless Porz, Luka revolt on him he'll be here til he retires imho.

He has some issues but Cuban loves the guy and reality is he has overachieved every season they weren't trying to tank.
Think all Mavs fans in the know realize they are tanking now for a shot at keeping the lottery pick.

If they get a top 8 pick to add plus, a max free agent to Luka and Porz plus the current role playing roster that's a playoff team for sure and potentially an elite team in a couple seasons depending upon where Luka and Porz top out.

I absolutely detest tanking in any form and so did Carlisle but he finally bought in after 4-5 years of dragging Dirk plus dead corpses to 50 wins.
