After a player on the Physically Unable to Perform list returns to practice following Week Six, the player's team has three weeks either to add him to the active roster or to place him on season-ending injured reserve.

There's also a third option. The team can cut him.

Jason Wilde of ESPNMilwaukee reports that the Packers will be releasing Harris today.

"Yes, that is what they are going to do," Harris told Wilde via text message. "I lost my job to injury, but I have only good things to say about Green Bay and everyone I worked with."

Though Harris believes he lost his job due to last year's torn ACL, he technically can't be cut if he's still injured now. The fact that he left the PUP list three weeks ago means that he passed a physical. Unless he has suffered a new injury within the past three weeks, he'll have no recourse. If he has sustained a new injury, he'll be able to file an injury grievance against the Packers.

Assuming Harris is still healthy, the reality is that the Packers don't need him. With Charles Woodson still chugging along and Tramon Williams arguably eclipsing Woodson and rookie Sam Shields coming along nicely (he had an impressive interception in Sunday night's 45-7 win over the Cowboys), Harris may not have gotten on the field much if he hadn't been cut.

Since the move comes after the trading deadline, Harris and the balance of his $2.5 million salary will be exposed to waivers. If he clears, he'll become an unrestricted free agent.

Why can't Jerry make this approach

Well, it is mainly about the emergence of Sam Shields at CB for the Packers. He was undrafted this year despite clocking in the fastest time at the combine and the Packers experiment of converting him into a defensive back is paying off.

Al Harris is 35 -- coming off a knee surgery -- and they don't have a spot for him on the roster.

You want Jerry to cut people?

Well they did cut some players.

You want him to cut people off of PUP?

Or you want him to cut someone for an injury when they have a suitable replacement who is playing well...in which case which player do you want jerry to cut who has been injured who also has a suitable replacement in place who is playing well?

/aggravated enough about the team, coaches and FO...now this crazy stuff.

Sign him. Bench Scandrick.

If he was not 36 years old I would sign him now and get him ready for next year but at 36 he does not have many "next years" avaliable

to be waved by GB today.

Is it worth bringing in a veteran CB for the rest of the year or just stick w/ what's not working?

I'd take Mel Renfro, current age, at this point. The way the secondary is playing.

I would rather we somehow managed to sign Dennis Thurman to coach the secondary.

All the above BrainPaint... I just want Jerry and co to make some moves to make the players know they're fed up with this foolishness. I didn't realize Al was on the Pup list until yesterday but him being hurt would still be an upgrade over Scan*****.

Well if him being hurt and on the PUP makes him better than Scan...why not just bench scan and have nobody play that position?

I get the frustration...I do. But the situation with Harris is he is being let go because they have someone to replace him who is young and doing a pretty good job....not because the packers are trying to send a message. This team does not need another aging injured player to help it.

He can't be worse than Scandrick. And what does it hurt at this point to take a look at him?

I'd probably start him next to newman. And move Jenkins to #3.

this is just dumb. Yes he can be worse than Scandrick. And Jenkins would not be a good nickel corner, he can't tackle! At least apply a little bit of reasoning.
