For the average narcissist, Facebook is [a] tool that may promote anti-social behavior.

Facebook "offers a gateway for hundreds of shallow relationships and emotionally detached communication," according to study by Western Illinois University professor Christopher Carpenter.

In the study, Carpenter defined narcissism as "a pervasive pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration and an exaggerated sense of self-importance," according to a press release from the university.

Using a Narcissistic Personality Inventory, Carpenter and his students surveyed 292 people - most of whom were college students - to measure "self-promoting" Facebook behavior, such as people posting status updates, their photos, updating profile information; as well as "anti-social behaviors," including seeking social support more than providing it, getting angry when others do not comment on status updates and retaliating against negative comments.

i don't even know anymore. since i own my internet radio station i get a LOT of people who friend me just so they can tell me where they're playing on a weekly basis.

i find it annoying as hell and have "demoted" several close friends because i really don't give a damn where they're having lunch every day.

I have 67. About 20 are family, 10 are people I went to school with, 2 are people I work(ed) with, the rest are a part of a fraternity I belong too.

I started adding the guys from the fraternity, then quit. There are too damn many of them and many I never really talk to anyhow.

I basically do not use FB except to get news from the fraternity. (they use it instead of email most of the time)

If I want to talk to my family, I call, email, text, or IM them.

Talk about the truth!! Whoa!! Most of my girl friends on FB are exactly like this. It's what drove me away from even using FB anymore. They always wonder why I am never on FB anymore.

Have you SEEN the crap you throw up on your wall? You are 30 years old. You are NOT 19 years old, but you certainly act like it on that site for some STRANGE reason.

It's all about them and what outlandish things they can say to get a comment or a like. The fights are completely ignorant as well. A few friends almost got fired because they were posting inner-office thigns on the wall and it got seen by the bosses who they friended. CRAZY !!

I have this friend who hangs w/ Jonathan Hillstrand from Deadliest Catch. Good lord, its like the guy walks on water where shes concerned. She always has to talk about what they are doing or did and where he's at and what glam celebs he knows.

I have 195. A lot are people from high school (over 20 years ago) that I assume just wanted to see what I aged like, since some I have never even passed a Facebook word with.

It's cool to share pics with in an immediate way and sometimes funny, but overall it's getting old. The crusades, the complaints, the constant minute by minute updates are not worth looking at after a while.

I can't believe the creator of such a time waster is so wealthy for creating something thats not really even a tangible product.

514, mostly family, close friends, former high school or college friends and people I currently go to med school with. I don't think I'm "friends" with anyone on fb who I havent met or hung out with at least a dozen times or so at some point.

I see about 50-60 of them on an almost daily basis these days, and the majority were people I saw on almost daily basis either in HS or college. School is pretty much forced interaction. :laugh2:

There are a couple people who have friended me who I don't remember seeing very much at any point but I know a lot of people who are friends with people they've never even met, which to me is strange.

I have never had one thought of even trying Facebook, *******, LinkedIn or any of the social sites that people talk about.

Facebook is doing fine without me, .. and I'm doing fine without facebook.

When I first joined facebook, my brother talked me into playing Mafia Wars. (he is the one that pushed me to join in the first place) He said friend all the people you can to help you out. So I friended about 300 people. After all that, I logged in the next day and had a torrent of **** on my screen and immediately unfriended all of them! :laugh2:

I remember years ago when that place actually was popular. I clicked a link that too me to one of those pages. I was so horrified by the page that I blocked the entire site at the router.

I have never visited that site since.
