I'm guessing 6:

1) Jaylon
2) LVE
3) Lee
4) Joe Thomas
5) Justin Phillips
6) Luke Gifford

This leaves out Christian Covington and Justin March.

Still haven't seen much from him, so I'm betting he can make it to the Practice Squad.

March is most likely gone, but he has been a contributor on special teams.

They've always kept 7 since moving back to the 4-3; although the 7th was R.McClain on year & he didn't count against the 53 for 4 weeks because he was suspended.

March is likely above Phillips due to scheme experience and readiness to play real games. Phillips flashed in ps games but is a developmental player. Gifford's injury means only 5 could be options for the 46 in game 1.

I think they like Covington but he has had injury issues.

They could move Gifford to IR with eligibility to return for game 9.

Wouldn't Gifford have to be on the initial 53-man roster to qualify for a return from IR move?

If we're keeping 7 'backers, then LVE, Jaylon, Lee and Joe Thomas are of course locks, so that leaves 3 spots for Gifford, Phillips, March and Covington to compete for.

Gifford seems like the odd man out here. March is an NFL vet with lots of experience on special teams. Covington made the 53 last year despite having pretty much zero playing time, so the coaches seem to be high on him. And beteeen our preseason heroes, Phillips is healthy right now. So I think this will shake itself out pretty easily.
