Tip? I normally tip wait staff 20% and always give something to the Sonic bar hop. Bellman get $2.00 a bag and valets get a minumum of $2.00

:)

Depends on what it is.

I left 18 and change on a $71 and change, restaurant tab the other day.
Left 7 on a 13 dollar bar tab a week ago.

I bet the debit/credit machine at Sonic has killed their tips.

Standard is 18% these days.

Depends. Some places grat at 15%, other's up to 20% of parties of 6 or more.

I leave 15% no matter how crappy the service, but if something was out of order I speak to the manager on the way out. 25% is my standard, and 50% isn't remotely out of the question if the person takes an honest interest in keeping me and my date happy.

I also pre-tip, which is against all kinds of etiquette rules. That $10-$20 at the front, plus letting my server know I'm in the business, will get me twice the service anyone else in the restaurant will see all night long.

Indeed. Most of the time I keep a few dollars worth of quarters in my car for those occasions.

20% standard. Higher for better service, lower for lesser service.

I feel percentage based tips are stupid.
I just go with what I feel they deserve.

Just double the first digit. If it's $70 meal, tip $14. If it's a $12 meal, tip $2.

Life's too short to spend the extra 10 seconds doing the math.

unless it is a $100 bill. Then if you give a $2 tip, that will be crazy bad.

I usually like to tip 20-30% depending on the service. At Cracker Barrel, because we know the servers there get tipped badly, we can tip up to 50%.

I think only once have we left less than 10% tip, and that was because the service was very very bad. If you are in Nashville, I would not really recommend Bosco's (in Hillsboro) unless you like local brewed beers. The service there was horrible even when half the tables were empty. The guy took over 45 minutes to take our order, another 30 minutes to serve our food (not his fault I guess since that's from the kitchen), and an hour to pick up our check :( He rarely refilled out drinks unless we were relentlessly seeking his attention. It wasn't like we were a big party, maybe 8 people.

Bet the waitron units LOVE you when your tab breaks the 3-digit plateau!

You do that too, huh?

It's funny to see the server/bartender's face sometimes, when you slip them a sawbuck and tell them, "Keep Daddy happy, and baby'll get some new shoes."

They'll be circling your table like they're hungry dogs, and you're wearing meat-overalls. ;)

This is a situation where, imo, it's perfectly acceptable to walk out. Seriously.

I thought it would have been obvious that it's not just the "first digit" when dealing with amounts with more or less than two digits.
