I was doing a mock draft and have been fiddling around targeting linebackers primarily in that second round sweet spot. There are about 4 premium linebackers in that sweet spot that I believe would likely really help us.
There is a tier below that that primarily has Kyle Louis in that tier, and one might argue that’s a tier by itself.
Then lower you have Perkins/York, etc.
Suppose the Cowboys take an OLB/Edge early: one of Bain/Reese/Bailey/Mesidore/Faulk (I don’t care for him) Howell or Thomas. Do you think Kyle Louis and a lower tier linebacker (Perkins/Elarms Orr/York/) is enough help this year on defense at ILB?
I ask that because I believe there may very well be higher valued players than ILB on the board when Rodrigues/Hill/Golday/Trotter are on the board.
I would love to hear your thoughts on this.
At this point, I'd go one early and one third day. I think right now we are worse off at starting ILB than any other position on defense.
At OLB/DE, we have a player who showed promise as a rookie (Eze) and a player we traded for as a starter (Gary). At DT/DE, we have Quinnen and Clark and the third starter (Ogbinnia, Bullard) won't be on the field as much as them. At S, we have Thompson, Hooker, Locke and Bell. At CB, we have Bland, Revel and Durant. We could certainly upgrade all of those positions, but we at least have some options there if we don't, even if they don't work out like we want.
At ILB, we have Overshown, and that's it. Counting on Shemar James to be the other ILB starter is asking too much IMO. Unless we trade for an ILB, then I think we have to target one with one of our first-round picks. Now, I'm not saying we have to take an ILB at 12 or 20, but I do think we should move around with at least one of those picks with that in mind.
Depthwise, we've got James and nothing else really, just a player (Justin Barron) who was on the practice squad last year. I do think we'll ultimately more Liufau back to ILB, but he hasn't shown he can play either LB spot.
