Running backs are extremely valuable, but they age fast.
The system in place does not benefit them because most running backs are ready to go on day one. Other positions take longer to develop in general and take much less early contact overall.
However, we need great backs to want to be great backs instead of switching to other positions early on for money reasons. It's a critical position in the game.
The fix is relatively simple.
1. Put a premium on rookie RB salaries. Say a 25% increase requirement when drafted, with mandatory 10% escalation clauses each year of the rookie deal.
2. No franchise tags for running backs unless the RB agrees.
3. Make the 5th year option on first-round RB picks have to be approved by the running back.
Give these guys some power so the position stays lucrative for guys to want to be backs.
The snaps and punishment they take early warrants a different approach.
