Phil Niekro was the best knuckleball pitcher I have seen.

Definitely better than Joe. I guess you have to go back to Hoyt Wilhelm to find one as successful .... a bit before my time.

By the way, remember Joe Niekro's incident with the nail file on the mound that was caught on TV - it was a priceless baseball moment.

Yeah I remember that. Always like Joe though may he rest in peace.

Joe definitely wasn't bad, just a step below his brother. Who knows, maybe he staged the whole nail file incident to build a psychological edge. Gaylord Perry used to touch his cap all the time just to create the impression that he could be reaching for a "foreign substance".

He tried to get away with it just as Gaylord Perry was tossed for vasiline he put under the bill of his cap.

I know they both did it, but I also think they did it less than people thought. They may have both played it up quite a bit.

I'm sure your right. Any thing to get into the batters head.

I don't know if you have to go back that far. Tim Wakefield is closing in on 200 wins. Charlie Hough had over 200 wins. Both are way more than the 143 wins that Wilhelm produced even if they don't have near as good ERAs as Whilhelm.

I know Gaylord said he played it up and tried to plant the seed in the batter's head. Not sure if Jim Niekro tried to do the same. His deal with the file always intrigued me. How do you stand on a mound, 60'6" inches from the batter and umpire, other umpires surrounding you, and use a file to mark a ball? David Copperfield would have trouble pulling that one off.
