i believe a new position is coming

Just like the 3-4 created rushing linebackers I believe there will be a new position in the coming years. I believe there will be a hybrid corner/linebacker position. I don't mean safety like players I mean linebackers who can cover like corners don't hate we never thought there would be huge players who could handle the ball in the nba and then came magic lebron kevin durant. This will happen because there is a need to cover slot receivers without having to go to the nickel. These slot receivers are dangerous and the teams that run the three receiver sets on 1st and 2nd downs will cause this to happen.

So how big will this CB/LB be?

If anything, you'd have LB/S type guys, but I don't think you can go to a LB/CB in the NFL.

However, Virginia Tech does have a position like this in its D, with the rover and whip linebacker positions.

The rover is essentially a SS and the whip is a smaller weakside LB, who is generally around 225 lbs and can cover in nickel situations

Doubtful now a safety LB yea but Dallas did that first under Jimmy his name was Darren Woodson

Ah..you're incorrect. Iit will be the kicker/linebacker. In fact, he is on our roster now.

They will be actual linebacker size but will be able top cover receivers.

Ocassionally there is a 240 lbs guy who can run fast enough to cover some receivers, but to be able to accelerate as quickly or change directions on a dime in the same way is a little much. Besides, if your linebackers are chasing receivers downfield, who's playing the run or the shirt passes to that side? Or the TE?

It will be the OL/RB position. Yes, the player will be big enough to play left tackle but fast and elusive enough to run the ball. He will simply block for himself as he runs.

Also, stay tuned for the Long Snapper/Kicker position and the Center/Quarterback hybrid position.

Thomas Davis is a close fit to that mold. 6 feet or so, about 245 or so. He was a great safety in college (Georgia) but they (Panthers) converted him to LB when he went pro. He is pretty good in coverage, and a good LB also.

I have a question that I thought would've been asked already but suprisingly hasn't:

If I can pick between a 6'3 240lb corner that runs a 4.4 or a 6'2 202lb corner that runs a 4.4, why in the hell would I take the shrimp? You'd pick the big guy every day. If this were to happen, every "true" CB would become extinct.

Personally, I do not see this position happening in the NFL anytime soon. To cover the slot receiver is a difficult task. I just don't see a team risking putting a "fast" linebacker on a slot. I mean it happens from time to time and usually ends up being the player the QB is looking at. I'll be happy when we have a LB who can cover good TE's and RB's out of the backfield.

if everyteam ran the 3-4 wouldnt the passrushing OLB put the 4-3 De out of extinction? yes it would but we have both...it will be the same way,,,it may even be a totally new defense...point is, the slot receiver is going to cause defenses to change....they dont want to pull their base defense and this is how they will adjust....these players will exist eventually because the technology is there for players to get bigger and faster....30 years ago we never thought we would see so many 300 pound o linemen...and if we said back then there would be this many we sure wouldnt say they would be able to pull and run like they do....but they do

what about the size of the linebackers...we never would have said they would be able to play linebacker at 255 when they were 220 back then, we would have said they would be too slow..but they are....its simple evolution people...and this is the next thing that is going to happen...you cant see it yet cause it hasnt happened, same as the other things that have evolved...like I said bookmark it and check back with me in 3 years...
