With the most likely 4 or 5 QBs going in the first 9 picks, it's basically guaranteed the following players will be there at #10:

Surtain
Horn
Sewell
Pitts
Barmore
Slater

Any of those players are worth the #10 pick and start with the exception of Sewell and Slater given Smith and Collins are healthy.

Can't wait to see who we end up with next week in round 1.

Sewell and particularly Pitts will be long gone by 10.

It will likely be one of Surtain, Horn or Slater. If I had to guess now, I’d say Surtain is the guy.

I just made a thread that we have the opportunity to get the number one defensive player in the draft. Is Surtain the “best” one in your opinion? I’m not convinced he’s the best.

As we saw last year, anything can happen..what if Slater goes ahead of Sewell? That's not that far fetched. But I agree, it's most likely going to come down to Surtain or Horn

IMO Surtain and Horn have always been the 2 targets. Pitts or Sewell are the only 2 guys that would stop them from taking either of those guys.

I think this is pretty spot on. The question is, under what circumstance do they trade down? Obviously if all 4 are gone. If horn is the only 1 left do they trade down?

I think they really like Horn. But I’m sure they have a price. A good offer and I think they move.

I think it comes down to how you view the CB position vs other defensive positions.

Surtain is, IMO, a very good CB prospect who has just about everything you could want in a corner except for elite speed and twitch... and those are still really good.

Everything else being equal, I prefer a dominant DE or DT if I’m using a high first round pick, but I do value CB enough where when you have much more talent at that position, I don’t hesitate to take the high value. There really isn’t a DL that is as good a pick as Surtain will be.

I think Phillips is a really good EDGE and close to Surtain but his medical are worrisome. Where Surtain’s floor is the second story... phillips’ is in the basement, unfortunately. The DL fan in me is saying take the chance on Phillips... but I just couldn’t with Surtain there.

Corner is a more impactful position (IMO) than an off the ball LB and where there are almost no questions with Surtain, there are plenty with Parsons. If I had to take a LB in the first, I’d probably go with JOK anyway. I think he’s the future of 43 LB’s.

Horn, I like a lot, just not as much as Surtain.

In the end, Surtain is a very good prospect from a great program at a valuable position, has almost no downside and is going to be a day one starter at CB for a Dallas team that desperately needs one. I don’t think anyone should over think it... he should be the guy.

That is just the way I see it though.

True enough. I wrote in a different thread on here the other day that I try to never speak in absolutes when it comes to the draft... but Pitts won’t make it to 10. He won’t. If he somehow makes it past Atlanta, Cincy, and Miami, someone will go up and get him. I just can’t see it.

However, I’m willing to concede that Sewell might slip to 10, though I think the odds are long. He’s a great player at a very valuable position that is difficult for NFL teams to fill. I think he goes to Carolina at 8 at the latest. But I could be wrong, I admit.

Anyway, here’s to hoping that I am wrong as hell and that Pitts or Sewell do slide to 10. Either would be a home run pick.

I agree w all of that. Let's hope we get lucky again

I am hoping that neither of them fall to 10. Because then you would have to take them or give them to a team in your division. I would much rather they go in the top 9 and allow me to take Surtain at 10. A historically bad defense needs much more help than a very good offense

While I agree that a Pitts and Sewell could be gone, that just opens the opportunity for a potential blue chipper like Chase to be there.
What do you do there, in that scenario?
Some player a maybe a blue chipper is going to be there at 10, higher probability if the Bears move up and high probability suggests they do.
If 5 QBs go before we pick, it just basic math that pushes an elite prospect to 10.

At pick #10 overall, I want safe. And I think Surtain is the safest defensive player option, by a lot. He has been described as a high ceiling, high floor player and that’s the kind of player I want with my first round pick.

To say nothing of the fact that if Dallas does go offense in round one, they’re spending the entire rest of the draft behind the 8-ball trying to make up for it on defense.

Always knew you were a conservative.. :D

Surtain is the guy, pro bowl talent, no red flags on or off the field. He's smart too, Saban said that each game a player had to prepare a scouting report on the opponent and Surtain's were always the best. People talk about Pitts or Sewell being there at 10, there's a chance Surtain won't be there.

If you figure 4 QBs go, then Pitts,Sewell,Chase, Surtain. Dallas would end up with: Slater or Horn, but that means probably Justin Fields is on the board so there is a trade back option unless you want Fields to fall to the Eagles. I think you want Fields to go to the Eagles so it’ll likely be Slater or Horn to Dallas.
