Hey guys, I'm flying into San Luis Obispo to have a 10 day visit with my Army kid and I'm learning that motels are very expensive. Can any of you guys point me in the right direction as far as inexpensive motels?? He's shipping out to his next duty station in S. Korea May 25th and I may not see him for another year. I don't want this to put a financial hardship on me and my family. He already bought my plane ticket. I just need ideas as far as lodging. Feel free to message me. THANKS MUCH.

Can't you look online for places in the area?

Either way, I'm jealous of him. South Korean women!

An extended stay would probably e the best bet there, not a cheap area. I have a condo in Goleta(outside Santa Barbara) that we rent out. It would almost be a two-hour drive to SLO though. It might be vacant but I would have to check with our property management.

Off topic:
I don't know if you've ever been to Korea, but I was stationed there for a year back in the late 90's (when it was still the wild wild Wes...err....East). Korean Women are extremely tough nuts to crack. I think it's the deeply embedded stoicism that their culture has developed/had to maintain after thousands of years fighting off neighbors to their peninsula. If you ever happen to go to South Korea, you absolutely have to visit the Korean War Museum in Seoul. It's not all about "our" Korean War with them. It has recreations of the ancient boat warfare that was a part of life for them. Very large museum. When you leave that place, you get a sense that their culture (the whole of Korea) was forged in war. We got to (was a requirement) to visit the DMZ and that was another eye opener. Also, our War to defend the South Koreans doesn't get anywhere near the attention it should, is misunderstood/glossed-over due to it being sandwiched between WWII and Vitenam and was, IMO, one of the few successful/noble "police actions" the US was involved in.

Back on-topic: Like someone else stated, look at Air BnBs.

not yet. I need something for 1 adult. Just myself. Closer to San Miguel the better. I am trying to find something in the 60$ a night range. I need it for 10 days. He lives off base. For a reference point, his base is Camp Roberts. Im flying in from Abilene.

lmao..I warned him of the "wiles' of the ladies there . He's 20 and Im sure the ladies will find him there. I have looked but I cant afford to pay 1200 bucks . Its insane. He has an off duty day today, MAYBE he can check on this for me. I gotta book lodgings quick I expect. I am hoping a board message member in the zone lives in the area and can tell me what the best deal might be.

he will be there a year as well. Will have the option to re-up for another year he tells me. He signed up for 6 years. Been in since 2019. He didnt anticipate being this board. He'll just be 23-24 when he gets out. Still very young. Great kid.

I was actually going to ask you if he was getting stationed at Camp Humphries (since you stated he was Army). I was stationed at Osan but went down to their spot a few times to check out their "night life". I've heard all of the "Juicy Bars" have pretty much had to get rid of their girls and convert back to just bars due to all of the Human Trafficking enforcement during the 2000's. The only girls he needs to watch out for are the barracks queens...they get around. Even back in the 90's, the STDs on base were worse than off-base. That was actually told to us from public health. I didn't understand that until the first few nights living in the dorms where E-2 all the way to E-8s from the same unit lived and partied in the same building.

He's about to get to know gas masks and chem gear more than he's ever had before. Luckily, the new masks are actually breathable compared to the Darth Vader, single-filter, cold war crap from before!

Nice feedback man. TY. He graduated Ft. Gordon in 2020.(AIT)...Did boot camp at Ft. Jackson. Now he's out west like I said. He told us all about the gas mask stuff when he went thru BC. So your saying there's more of that in SK?

I'm likely 2 sleep on his couch it appears. He has 2 buddies he rooms with. I didnt wanna do that but I seem to have 0 choice. My neck the way it is and all..couches aren't my friend. After 10 days of that I will be a physical mess by the time I get back home.

Bring a yoga mat and sleep on the floor.

Oh, absolutely. Not gas chamber stuff, just training exercises where you're in MOPP gear (chem gear) for a week at a time "playing war" on/around post. We call it "sucking rubber" because...well...you're sucking air through a rubber mask for several hours a day! But that's only a few weeks out of the year That's why he was told he might be bored there...there's no real mission other than to stay trained-up for the day (God Forbid) that NK attempts to take over the peninsula again.

After knowing what I know and how much time/money I wasted partying in Korea when I was there, I'd tell my kid to stay enrolled in a few online College courses at a time. He can still party a bit, but it will keep his off-time structured to where he's not living in the bars like most get into a habit of doing.
