I'm sure they tried it on other things, both living and not, before this little demonstration. At least i would hope they did.

There is this scene from John Carpenter's The Thing, where Palmer notices that the alien creature's head separates itself from its own burning body. Then the head immediately grows legs and tries to scamper out of the room unnoticed.

What he says next is exactly what I thought while watching that video.
