If You Buy Or Sell on Craigslist, Be Careful

On September 1st, a 74 year old Tucson man was shot trying to buy an iPad on Craigslist.

Today, at church I learned that that man is the father of a good friend of mine. He is alive, home, and lucky to be alive.

I told my wife about the shooting, completely unaware of the fact it was my friend's dad. The shooter panicked as soon as he demanded the money and shot him.

I know the woman in the video wrongly identified as Victim's Father, but her brother is my friend. His 2nd daughter and my girls are very close.

I hope they catch the guy. "Black man in his 20s in skinny jeans wearing a ballcap" isn't a lot to go on. It sounds like your friend's dad went to an apartment complex where the shooter had arranged the sale, and ran off on foot. He may live in a complex adjacent to it or even in that very complex. I hope they contacted Craigslist and are trying to track down the shooter's IP address from the ad he put in, and the email address of the account. Suspect likely a druggie with a rap sheet. He pulled the trigger, that is pretty bold and indicates he's got a history. You mentioned he panicked, not sure how that came about. Anyway, good luck to the authorities on finding him.

There have been several stories of similar attacks including some where people were killed buying stuff off Craig's List. If you are ever going to buy or sell something in person from or to someone you met online, it is a good idea to set up the meeting in a very public place.

The story did not report this. They have a suspect, but he is not yet in custody. David was drenched in blood and could not move his left arm to get his cell phone in his pocket so he honked the horn until a maintenance man and a resident who was an EMT came. He is so lucky.

I swear his family did not say he was Black though. I don't know if the reporter added that or not.

Then again, I didn't ask what race he was so maybe they just didn't offer. I was more concerned about his grandkids being shaken than anything else.

I have used Craigslist 3 times. Once to sell a TV, once to buy a camera lens, and once to get rid of an entertainment center. For the TV and entertainment center, I had the buyers come haul it away from the house. This was back in 2005 and I thought nothing of it. Looking back on it in 2008 when the economy turned sour and you started hearing about a rash of CL crimes, I couldn't believe I was that stupid. I haven't used it in nearly 6 years and don't plan on ever using it again for anything.
