In Cancun, Cenote and Chichen Itza Ruins

There are other pyramids you can go up but it's about 2 hours from Cancun. It's a fun time but probably not worth the extra time.

Cenotes are amazing - I could spend all day at one.

Also go to Cozumel or at least down to Playa del Carmen for some BOMB snorkelling. DOn't even need to scuba, the snorkeling is fun.

Mexico is a fantastic vacation. I plan on going again in the next year and saving money by NOT going to an all inclusive. I personally think it can be done cheaper by just renting a condo or going to a standard hotel. I don't mind cooking for myself or just eating cheap tacos all week :).

I stayed at a place in town with the locals. It was owned and operated by an American woman.

The place was safe. It was gated and fenced in. I think there were 3 or 4 separate 1 room 2 bed efficiencies and a pool. The rooms had a small kitchen - just a stove, micro wave, small fridge and sink. The price was very reasonable and they had a deal with a scuba instructor so you got a discount on the combined stay and diving.

They were deadheads too, so I figured it would be cool and it was.

The scuba instructor told me how he snuck into the United States illegally twice to see the dead at in Cali then snuck back into Mexico.

I still have the scuba instructor name and email if you would be interested. Could probably find the bed and breakfast again via google.

You can do a Mexican vacation dirt cheap, I've been there 4 times the last 3 years the longest stay was last year for 3 months in total on that trip I spent about 3000$
