Many of us Cowboys fans may have forgotten that to win consistently in this league it takes an entire team buying in, working together as a 53 man unit.

Those teams winning championships in the 70s and 90s weren’t just a collection of stars. They were entire teams- offense, defense and special teams, with each guy playing a role in winning. Sure we had stars. But we also had role players.

That win last night is a great reminder that TEAMS win. Not just individuals. Yes, it takes talent to win in the NFL. But it also takes coaching, role players, commitment to the team, etc.

This team won that game last night without its best player, without its starting left tackle in the second half, one its best receivers still injured, and one its other receivers fighting through a tight hamstring. And still missing its starting defensive end.

That’s a TEAM winning these games.

Yep…

This is why you play the game. On paper no way does Dallas win that game.
I was remembering last night something interesting about Big Mac’s teams. The year his pack team won the SB, they actually had the MOST injuries in the league that year.

They had lost half their OL, several skill position players and 3 starters on defense and still won the SB. Looks like Big Mac fosters mental toughness.

he would make a great psychologist lol. The man is underrated. He's a winner and the team is drawn 2 him like a magnet. Its a culture shift bigtime.

It’s nice that the team doesn’t have to overcome their flaws and their coaching like they did in the past. Garrett sucks.

we are seeing what MM can do when he has a full offseasn to get his hands on the players/staff. This is truly his REAL first year with the Cowbys as far as Im concerned. Last year was a toss out year and unfair to him. He never had a fair shot. Their needs 2 be an asterisk next to 2020. THIS is the real MM in 2021.

I still can’t believe it took JJ an entire decade to realize we did not have a head coach who could get this team beyond mediocrity.
JG had pics. Thats why...

I think that last defensive drive with 3 bogus penalties went along way toward this teams development…they displayed great mental toughness in only giving up 3 and giving our O the chance to win the game. If we go on a deep run or win it all I’ll look back at that defensive series as defining moment for this team…

I’ve been a Cowboys fan since 1964. I learned many years ago that the teams winning championships aren’t always the most talented. But they are always the mentally toughest. You can’t win big games in this league without mental and physical toughness. That has been a key ingredient missing from this organization for a long time.

And multiple contributors!
On offense: Rush, Zeke, Pollard, Coop, Lamb, Wilson, and the OL
On defense: Parsons, Gregory, Lewis and the run defense was better, etc.

A TEAM win!

Jerrys greatest misstep is sticking with Garrett too long! Why do I say this?....because Jerry...the GM...actually gave Garett PLENTY of talent to work with...the results did not match the talent level of the team(s).

Dave Campo did not have a lot of talent. Bill Parcells did a very good job with what he had. In reflection...you could argue Wade (who clearly proved to be a COORDINATOR) was just as impactful as Garrett was.

Jason is a head coach...(but he is average). He is not a coordinator...because there is nothing innovative about him. The GREAT Tom Brady said in an interview last week that the NFL has become a skills competition...not a tough man contest. And Jason Garrett is the wrong coach for what the league has become.

I am not the BIGGEST McCarthy fan...but he deserves credit where credit is due. When Romo was out...the Cowboys had ZERO chance. Forget score points, the Cowboys struggled to get first downs when Romo was out. I would have fired Garrett on that premise alone!

McCarthy has proven to keep this team competitive without its starting QB.

Since we're calling out individual contributions to the team, let's recognize the ENTIRE coaching staff:

  • Al Harris - DBs aren't perfect but Anthony Brown is playing as well as you can expect from him, the safeties aren't being foolish, and tackling is improving. At least they are giving themselves chances.
  • Aden Durde - The defensive line, without Lawrence, is finding ways to get pressure. As the game wears on, they just get home faster. I wish they were better against the run, but that's mostly a nameless DL.
  • Dan Quinn - This defense works, plays well, and knows assignments. Amazing job, amazing hire.
  • Doug Nussmeier - I saw him smiling at Rush one play like a proud papa. Great job getting the backup ready and playing with confidence.
  • Skip Peete - RBs play with authority and to their skills.
  • Joe Philbin - top 5 OL in the league.
  • Kellen Moore - Offense never lets the defense get comfortable.
  • Mike McCarthy - Say what you want about clock management, every coach has flaws. But if you want a reminder of what the Cowboys best coaching looked like over the last ten years, watch the gameplan that Minnesota came in with. It was like watching a mirror. Mike McCarthy LEADS, the team is PREPARED, there is AGGRESSIVENESS and these teams FIGHT. I'm a huge Bob Sturm fan - best writer there is for the Cowboys, although he grew up and will forever be a massive Green Bay fan, and I trust him when he says McCarthy is quality. I'm a believer; coaching is now a competitive advantage in most games.

I think it was obvious we had superior talent. Even our backup QB out performed their franchise QB.
