When he said, "$14.00," I thought to myself, "$14.00 per/hr isn't bad for an assembly line." Then he finished his statement with, "per day." Then he said that amount doubles after a few years... wow. Talk about cheap labor. I could barely afford gas on that weekly salary, let alone food.

That will buy 3 gallons of gas here. I think I paid $4.39 last time I filled up.

Every country goes through the industrialization process in their expansion. Everyone brings up the conditions, but my question is how much would these people be making if it weren't for Foxconn? Probably nothing. There are a lot of Chinese families who have food because of these jobs.

Interesting take on it.

That does not make it right however.

To me the question is what kind of living can they have on that wage? Is that a good quality of life for that salary? I think Apple should at least pay wages there to provide that for its workers.

The way the world has evolved is multi-nationals will go to emerging economies for manual, rote labour jobs. If you want a good living here you have to have a job that isn't out-sourcable either due to the need to be here physically to do the job, professional certification or high level skills that are scarce globally. Everyone else is fighting against the race to the bottom. There is little that can be done to legislate against it.

The one thing I would suggest is the USA should stop allowing its corporations to claim their profits elsewhere. Apple really generates its earnings here, not in Switzerland. Everyone knows it but no one does anything about it. All those Apple workers grew up here, used your education resources, used American infrastructure and know-how to build their company and then they avoid paying business taxes on their profits - scum. It's not just Apple, either - lots of companies play this game with a fake head office in Bermuda, Cayman Islands or Switzerland to avoid paying taxes on their business profits generated in the US.

Why is not right, I doubt Apple is putting a gun to these peoples heads and saying you have to work here. They do not have to take the job.

It will lead into a forbidden type of thread if I go into that.

I will just simply say that we as Americans should not have to outsource jobs when we have unemployment here.

Everyone knows the reasons as to why we lose our jobs here in America to over seas competitors. It doesn't take a brain surgeon. Our tax structure is out of control in this country.

America is NOT business friendly. Hello World....you DO NOT want to do business here. Go away!

I read that an iPhone made in the US would cost over 17 times more than those manufactured in China... that's over $10k for a single phone...

I wonder how much a Chevy Silverado made in Fuyang, China would cost us retail?

I would imagine a lot cheaper than the 30k+the dealer has it for down the street.

We look at the $14 a day and says wow, but their cost of living is a lot cheaper than ours. That factory is located in Shenzhen. The minimum wage there is what about to about $208 per month. If they only worked five days a week and four weeks a month, (total of 20 days) that would amount to $280. That is over 25% more than minimum wage and if it doubles in three years, it's a lot more than minimum wage.

The real question is, what is the actual cost of living there. Is minimum wage there as bad as it is here? Making minimum wage in NY wouldn't afford you a card board box to live in.

Bringing the jobs to America, and paying people more money to make the same product, would do what?

A) Make the product more expensive to buy
B) Make the product less expensive to buy
C) I don't know

Perhaps if our government didn't impose the 2nd highest corporate tax rate in the world, U.S. companies wouldn't mind paying more taxes, but as it is, they find any way they can to get out of it.

I'm asking because I don't know. How is this different than a sweat shop that people protest? The only thing here that amazes me is the cost of an iPad for us. In other countries they don't have our cost of living, they have huge labor forces, and can make things cheaper than we can because of what we demand.

The fact is we want products at good prices and to have workers paid more than what the product costs. That is called bankruptcy in any language.

I'm not so appalled at the prices given it happens everywhere in the world. I just wonder if this is no big deal because it is not Microsoft? I say that and I am almost certain someone can show me equal or worse conditions there.

:laugh2: The funny thing is; it's a high corporate tax rate, but there are so many loopholes that most companies hardly pay any taxes. Apple, Google and other like companies would owe the US billions of tax dollars, but they use loopholes and stash profits off-shore so they don't have to pay them.

The US just raises the tax rate on everyone else since they mega-corps won't pay their fair share.
