iPad Catching Up With Kindle

There is still a big price difference, but the iPad is challenging the Amazon Kindle as a preferred device for reading e-books in ownership and satisfaction.

That's according to a ChangeWave survey of more than 2,800 U.S. consumers. Of iPad owners, 75% said they were "very satisfied" with their devices, while only 54% of Kindle owners could say the same. When the "somewhat satisfied" numbers are added, it's a tighter competition, with the iPad scoring 96% and the Kindle getting 92%.

I had to un-ignore you to read this. ;)

I got one of the new Kindle's for my bday not long ago. For reading books the thing just plain rocks. There are no pictures and stuff so it doesn't matter.

I see lots of people on the train have iPads, all of them are reading the NY Times. The Times looks incredibly good on the iPad I admit. The biggest issue I've seen with the iPad as a reader is when they are on the train and the sun is glaring in the window. That is going to be an issue with any device with that type of screen. (including the new B&N's new color Nook and other Android devices) Lately that hasn't been an issue as it's dark in the mornings and on the train ride home. That is the best thing about all the other E-Ink readers. That isn't an issue. (though you can't read in the dark without a light) My Kindle has the leather cover with a light that draws it's power from the Kindle. I haven't had to use it yet though.

Now, to re-ignore or not to re-ignore... ;)

I picked up the new Kindle last Sat from Target. If you are in the market for an e-book reader, I highly suggest you kicking the tires of the Amazon Kindle.

I went to B&N Sat morning and spent about an hour w/ an associate there going over the B&N new Color Nook. It is a gorgeous piece of hardware, but that for me is where it stopped. It is far to glossy and heavy. I for one cannot for the life of me read a book on a SHINY screen. The reflection is terrible. The color nook has that issue. It's the same reason I never used my kindle app I d/l on my iPhone in the past and now on my Dell Streak. The expereince on those screens sucks when you are really wanting an enjoyable reading experience.

Now back to the Kindle. I absolutely love it. I actually forget I am reading an e-reader and not a regular book. I have no problem w/ reflection and the device is EXTREMELY durable feeling and quick between pages. It's one of the best devices I have ever purchased. I am so happy w/ it that I am ordering one for my son for Christmas. He is an avid reader like myself and really digs my Kindle. I think he will be surprised.

BTW: If you are set to purchase a Kindle, I suggest you purchase it from your local Target store. Why? Well it's actually cheaper. If you go to AMAZON.COM the reader and the case w/ the light and a 2 yr extra warranty is about 299 or 298.00, I forget. You can save about 20 bucks buying it from Target and purchasing the Target warranty for 2 years which is 17.00, the Amazon warranty is 49.99.

The associate at Target says its way better because they actually replace the device w/ a new one when you bring it in, where Amazon you have to call them and ship it to them and might get a replacement or it could take up to 2-3 weeks to fix yours and ship it back.

All in all a wonderful device, for those who enjoy reading.

Kindle all the way and I have been checking all of the e-readers out for the past 2 years.

The new color Nook also doesn't have 3g, only wi-fi, which isn't really a huge sell buster for some, but contributed to mine.

I completely agree.

I was a little worried about spending over $200 with the case that includes the light (wanted 3G, not just WiFi) for a device that I wasn't sure I was even going to be comfortable reading on. Within the first three minutes of reading on it I was sold. The new Kindle is fantastic in a way that is even better than an actual book. The E-Ink doesn't stress your eyes the way lit displays do (especially when reading for long periods of time) and you can adjust the font size if it's too small or too big unlike physical books.

The last thing I want to mention is when traveling. It is so much better just traveling with it rather than thick books. (sometimes 2 or 3) Then it brings us back to the fact that you can read for hours (on a plane) on it without getting a headache!

When you say this, what do you mean? I get terrible motion sickness when reading in cars, on planes, etc., and I'm not sure I understand how that would be any different on a kindle than reading an actual book. I've been thinking about getting a kindle for a while.

About traveling I'm talking about the space a book or books take up in my bag and the headache I'm talking about reading a back lit display or reading a book that has very small text.

One thing I like about the iPad, though I don't have one, is the other stuff - web browsing, e-mail, and magazine subscriptions on the go in a small form factor.

You can't browse and post on CowboysZone on a Kindle ;)

Actually I believe you can, it just probably isn't very good. Probably like web surfing with those older blackberrys. (shutter) I use my phone for that if I'm traveling these days.

You most certainly can. Not only that, but 3G access with the Kindle is 100% free. Admittedly, the browser isn't the best thing on earth and the e-ink display can only take you so far, but it's a great feature anyway and handy to have...especially if you don't have a fancy phone. And the Kindle also does email and periodical subscriptions as well (I subscribe to the Denver Post and Reader's Digest).

Anyways, I'm still not sold on reading on a backlit display like on a laptop or an iPad...20 minutes of that and I get a raging headache. I'm guessing that those that prefer reading on the iPad just haven't tried a real e-ink display. There's really nothing like it and I don't miss "real" books even a little bit.

I read a lot. I love collecting books so I never really had any desire to get a device like a kindle.

I'm not really sold on the iPad either. I've used one and like it. But, I have a netbook that I use quite a bit and can do more things on. I will, however, probably pick one up for the wife and use it.

What the iPad has over the kindle is multi-use. At least to me. The iPad is great for surfing the web. It can be Jailbroken. I can watch movies on it - slingbox with it as well.

If I got a kindle it would be one more device that I would have to carry with my EDC (every day carry) gear. I don't want to add another device. The kindle has a single purpose.

For me a laptop trumps all. One of the requirements for my mobile computing needs is the ability to develop on it. I can dual boot with Fedora Core running too.

This time around I'm thinking of getting my first MacBook Pro. Should be fun.
