My mother just called me and said her iPhone 4 arrived in the mail.

She says that when she applied her backup in iTunes to the iPhone 4, it didn't put all her apps that she has downloaded on her iPhone Desktop.

Do you have re-download every app again or should this be in the backup? I have never restored or upgraded to a new iPhone, so I have no idea.

Maybe some of the apps aren't supported on v4 therefore weren't restored?

In iTunes with the iPhone selected, go to the Apps tab and make sure the apps that she is missing are checked. Check the ones she wants and resymc and they should be there. She can also use this as an easier/quicker way to organize the apps.

If she had only downloaded the apps to her phone, they wouldn't have made it if all she did was a backup. It should have warned her to sync and then backup but who knows.

This. Not all apps are iOS 4 compatible just yet. She might have had some ancient ones on there :)

Depends on if she upgraded from 3.1.3 straight to the iP4 via backup too. Because of the new folders, etc, some of those apps may not have carried over due to not being able to be placed in the same location.

This is what is happening. She never synced here iPhone apps to her iTunes on her computer. When she synced her new iPhone to her backup file on iTunes, it couldn't include the apps because they're not synced to iTunes.

Just got my iPhone 4. There is no indication you should back up your old phone before proceeding to activate the new one. I did so anyway and all apps, txt msgs folders etc were copied to the new phone no problem. She can still connect her old phone, back it up, and restore it to the new phone. PM me if interested and I can write up directions if you can;t find something useful on the internets.

I downloaded iOS 4 for my 3GS...

I really like the folder feature. The only problem is that the font size on the folder titles are a bit small. I would like to at least make it bold...

Anybody figured out how to do that? I thought I had looked everywhere. It may not be possible...

Well I'm not due for an upgrade until next April...

I guess I could use my mod salary I make from here... ;)

So to be clear, before I get the new iPhone 4, I need to:

Go to iTunes
Go to the "Apps" tab
Check the "Sync Apps" checkbox

When I click the "Sync Apps" checkbox, I get a warning saying my apps on my iPhone could be wiped out if they don't match what is in iTunes or something like that, so I just pushed cancel at the moment.

Hmm.

Are you using the same computer that you initially set the phone up on?

Is the box already checked?

If I uncheck my box, I get that message.

No, if you want to transfer your apps purchased on your iphone to your itunes, you right click on the iphone on the right side of itunes and click "transfer purchases" or something like that.

Edit: First you should right click on your iphone (in the left bar in itunes) and select to backup first, of course. Can't ever backup too much.

I chose the "transfer purchases" option, thanks for the info.

I am going to assume the "synce apps" checkbox is for iTunes and the iPhone to sync each time you add a new app and plug your phone into your PC.

Transfer purchases will transfer the apps from your iphone to your itunes. Sync will get them from your itunes to your iphone. You can go in and select which individual apps you want to transfer to your iphone during the sync (and arrange them into folders, etc. before they sync).

No idea why they made the whole process so confusing. It's completely ********.

Agreed.

After I transfered purchases, I checked the "Sync Apps" and pushed "apply" and it proceeded to remove all of my apps. I then had to go choose each app and then they were put back on there but i'm pretty sure all the settings for the apps have been reset.

I immediately checked my iPhone Kindle app to survey the damage and all my books were gone but fortunately, they were in archives and could be restored.
