Open Source developers better stay the hell out of Iran. Anyone who worked on Apache would get the death penalty.

Iran’s supreme court has confirmed the death sentence on a Iranian-born Canadian resident for his part in developing pornographic websites.

Saeed Malekpour, 35, was arrested in Teheran on a visit. He is a permanent resident of Canada and was awaiting citizenship when he was arrested.

Toronto’s The Star reports:

An engineer and web designer, Malekpour was visiting his gravely ill father in Tehran when he was arrested in 2008 and charged with “insulting and desecrating Islam.” He was accused of creating a site Iran claims was used to post “pornographic” images.

According to The Guardian, Mr. Malekpour’s family say that he wrote photo-uploading software that was used by a porn website without his knowledge.

The Persian2English human rights website has a translation of the letter that purports to come from Mr. Malekpour which details the physical and psychological torture which led to him making filmed confessions. He says these were shown repeatedly on Iranian television, even at the same time as his father’s funeral.

i dont get what the problem is. he went to iran, he is most likely competent and he has shown he can provide for himself in the world so it must show he has a good abudance of intelligence and he goes to Iran, so whats the problem? He knows what Iran is and how they are. You walk into the jungle, you get bit by a poisonous snake, who are we to blame? The snake because it thought dinner was served?

Umm. His father was dying and he wanted to see him before he died. He had a valid reason for going to Iran. It isn't like he was a tourist. Not to mention, he is Iranian. Being Iranian is a lot safer than being an American in Iran.

defense rests. reread the article, doesnt seem safer to me. again, he knew what he was getting into. Im sorry his father was dying, but again he knew what the chances were. Is it fair, thats for one to decide, is it right, probably not, but its their country i have no say in it, so they decide whats right and fair and i stay the heck away from the place.

I agree with what you said but the problem for this guy was that he didn't know his software was being used by the porn sites, according to the article. So basically he was being blindsided.

Jeez, kill a guy for helping guys fap rather than have sex out of wedlock. They should really be trying to hang these suckers that think $20 a month for a little "me" time is fair.

He should of put a "Accept/Decline Virtual Mutah" into the software. Problem solved.

again. ill make it simple, its Iran, not America, dont confuse them, it doesnt matter what he knows or doesnt know, he knows its Iran, every aspect whether you know it or not, or if exists or not, its Iran, they dont care. Again, avoid the place unless you're okay with their reason of reality.
