They were just evaluating the Saints-Giants game and Irvin was gushing about the saints and made a comment that Sean Payton should have been the head coach of the Cowboys. One of the few times I have heard Irvin say anything about the coaching staff.

Should we have taken Payton?

Did we have a shot at Payton?
You know he coached in Dallas, right?

Yeah, I'd say we had a decent shot... would've had to fire Bill, though.

We probably would have had to make a serious move position-wise for him to stay in Dallas. If I'm not mistaken, Parcells was the HC at the time, so promoting Payton would have been nearly impossible. In hindsight, the Cowboys may have offered him a conditional promise if they knew Parcells would retire in 2007.

Ya meant to say "should we" have taken Payton.

I imagine that if we were able to keep him out of another team's clutches for just one more year, he would have been.

Intelligent people like Payton use there value to get promoted, unlike Garrett who could have coached a variety of teams after our 13-3 year. He'll never see a HC job, even in Dallas.

I think Payton has done pretty good for himself. This year he has high power offense. Just think before he came to Dallas, he was stripped of his plyaing calling dutes with the Giants I believe by Jim Fassal.

Is that what Sean Payton was doing with the New York Giants?

He was a hot assistant on the rise for a few years and then Jim Fassel took over the offense with things looking bad and the Giants made a run to the Super Bowl.

Jerry was never going to fire Parcells so he could have Payton. Parcells would still be here now if he had not decided to hang it up.
