I will be moving there in a few months. I know nothing about the city. Any areas that I need to avoid, or where good safe apartments are. Or any general good advice.

Anybody that lives there or knows the area would be helpful for any advice and such.

Thanks.

Las Colinas is part of Irving and it's a beautiful place. Valley Ranch happens to be there too, so you might want to look into it.

I apologize in advance if this is a long-winded response.

I was born and raised here in South Irving. In fact, I will be buying my parent's house. I can't wait. I live 10 minutes from Texas Stadium (rip), and 10 minutes from Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. South Irving is a twilight zone, but I love it. Michael Huff is from south Irving, and he went to my high school. He was a couple years younger than I.

Look at apartments off 635 and MacArthur. There are a myriad of nice apartments along MacArthur starting north of 114. Valley Ranch is just north of 635. My friend used to live in apartments right across the street from the practice facility that collapsed, and those were nice. There is a pretty big Indian population in that area, which has always baffled me. There are tons of nice little shops, and eateries.

Avoid 114/121 near the airport at all costs when driving. THE WORST TRAFFIC EVER, and on top of all that, construction.

Don't ever go to the Irving Mall. Like ever.

Anything else you want to know, feel free to shoot me a PM.

Oh that's easy. It's because of the corporate IT jobs that the big companies pay a pittance for to these folks. Just go to any Citi Group complex for instance, and you'll think you are in Bangalore.

As for Irving, I've been there now since February, and found out AFTER moving here to NOT live just off TX-183 that goes through Irving (and coincidentally right by Irving Mall, which is where I live close to).

Don't live in Irving. Commute there. :D

This. Irving is a dump!

Move a bit north of Irving (north of 635) to Coppell or somewhere like that.

I was pretty impressed with Plano as well.

I like Plano except for the fact that it so far from everything else in the D/FW area. Like Frisco. Frisco is really nice, but miles from everything.

Thanks everyone. I will have to take a look once I go apartment shopping. I'm hoping to go to grad school at the University of Dallas. Pretty big change for a small town farm boy.

Personally, my choices of places to live would be North Dallas/Plano area. But that might be a little to much of a commute for you. I'd guess 30 minutes one way on most days. Guess it depends on where in Irving you are. Not sure, but I think the GB Turnpike hits the west side of Irving. If your work/school is close to the turnpike, you can drive from Plano to Irving, and it might be a bit quicker than 30 minutes. I don't mind commuting that much, I've done worse. But some people can't stand that.

If you want to build I understand there is some nice real estate available at 2401 East Airport Blvd. in Irving.

One thing to consider...some places here still allow smoking in restaurants/bars. Drives me nuts (as a recovering long-time smoker). Irving is one of the places where it is hard to find a non-smoking establishment, at least it has been for me.

I end up having to commute to other areas when I go out.

Irving also seems to have strange ordinances...example - you have to have a permit from the city to have a freaking garage sale. And even then, you are allowed to have two per year max. Say what? What business is that of a city? And you can't post signs on poles, etc. Just weird stuff.

Also, if you end up near Love Field or DFW airport the air traffic noise will drive you nuts. ...or it does me...I have to sleep with earplugs. I get air traffic noise AND the stupid TRE train REALLY LOUD horn every weekday morning.

I'll defend the city on this one. Several years ago I had a neighbor down the street that had a perpetual garage sale going - every weekend you had to avoid the traffic from the people showing up. We called the city (I'm not in Irving by the way) and it turned out we had an ordinance limiting the number of garage sales a person can have. The city's position is that having regular garage sales crosses over into running a businesss, which I agree with. That's certainly what our neighbor was doing, and that should not be allowed in a residential area.

University of Dallas or the University of Texas at Dallas? I know they are two separate institutions, so just wondering.

Good idea that or find someplace in Grapevine, Southlake can cost a lot.

I lived in Irving for years and loved it. It's smack dab in the middle of the metroplex and has tons of highways making it easy to get around.

Las Colinas and Valley Ranch are all great areas to live in even though it is a bit pricey.
