So the GM hires a defensive coordinator to improve a defensive unit built upon your predecessor's scheme. Then, you knowingly let many mediocre players walk without extending them, to replace them with lesser talent on the cheap.

It seems they will excuse his first year's failings and make him head coach when they inevitably fire McCarthy. I suspect that this was their "master plan". And regardless of his failings, they will proceed with their agenda.
