Is it time to go back to a true 43 defense?

This team can rush the passer. They can play pretty good pass defense as well. But the trend this year across the league is running the football with multiple backs. Running QB’s as well. Two of those in our division with Jones and Hurts.

Quinn has got to figure it out and his best bet with what he has IMO is to play a true 43. The league has caught up to this D. We need three true LB’s out there IMO. They have been playing with 5 DB’s all year with Kearse and Wilson as that third LB and we are getting gashed. MLB, Weak Side, and Strong side. Damone and or Cox it’s time to play. It also would help to teach our DE’s about containment. It’s something I learned playing DE in Pop Warner.

Do this and this thing will improve IMO.

“Things will improve—“

said no sane Cowboys fan. Nothing about this abhorrent team can be fixed, modified, saved, nor overcame. It’s just a fact of life— death, taxes, and the cowboys sucking every season post their final 90s Super Bowl.

In my opinion that's exactly what he shouldn't be doing.

What is needed is more beef up the middle and better LB play. I think the hybrid 3-4 is the way to go. With an odd front. Also, Parsons needs to play on the outside all of the game and reduce his snaps if he is carrying an injury.

Change the scheme all you want, but at some point guys have to perform. We have a lot of guys on defense who play reckless, which at times can be an asset, but you have to earn that ability. You play uncontrolled while teams are running it on you 30+ times and bad things will happen.

Time for DQ to get these guys under control and if they cant be controlled you cant trust em. If you cant trust a player you need to show them the bench for a little bit.

I may end up looking like a fool, but I have a ton of faith that DQ gets this fixed (or at least a significant step in the right direction) this week against a tough matchup.

We need to do something on defense asap.

We’re not changing the scheme we’re just adding a true Strong side LB instead of a in the box Safety. It’s worked forever and will work again.

I could be wrong but I feel like the last time this team had a strong run defense was back around 07-09 when the team had a legit 3-4 defense and the horses to run it. It's been mostly downhill since the team basically quit on Wade in 2010...

Zimm and Marinelli both ran the 43 and stopped the run just fine. I’m not knocking Quinn here but the league has changed back to the running game this season as Defense’s were built to stop the Pass. It’s always morphing year after year to beat the other scheme. Similarly to how Denver went to that shell defense last year and gave the blueprint to stop our offense.

Maybe it would, I just don't see it. Especially with the injury issues at CB you may need the extra DB on the field. Plus it seems more often than not this team is getting gashed in the run game it's not keeping contain on the outside runs/qb runs and giving RBs cutback lanes.

I could be way off here, but it seems the Cowboys defense has more of a discipline problem than a personnel problem.

Had they gone out and gotten a Roquan Smith at the trade deadline I'd be with you, but I'm not sure this defense has the depth at LB right now to actually pull it off. Cox is basically a hybrid S/LB himself so I'm not sure that makes a huge difference. Clark I think absolutely can be a difference maker, but we also need to remember the guy just came back after basically zero offseason.

LB play has been bad all year. Parsons appears to have a nagging injury. Lots of teams run the 4-2-5 because of the heavy passing offenses nowadays. Unless you have elite DTs you’re going to give up on the run defense. Dallas is just worse right now because the other LBers not named Parsons are liabilities. LVE has to be one of the worst LBs in the NFL right now.

I don't disagree however their rushing TD highlights that we're still allowing O-Line to get to the second level too easily. On that play Bohanna concentrated on the Guard and the Center was allowed to get and block Micah who was expected to cover the gap...the size of the Grand Canyon....that play looks as if we allowed the run up the middle
Bohanna (and Gallimore) were on the field, shouldnt we block the middle snd allow Micah and Damone to utilise their speed out wide? It would be interesting to see what the splits are with the different DT combo's.

We can't make excuses for Micah, he, just like every other LB is going to struggle get off an O-Linesman that gets to him... as in the TD.
You have to protect the LB's

True, but LBs have to have the awareness to see the play and ability to shed blocks. LVE is really bad in both categories.

Agreed. Our LB's are terrible at diagnosing the run and filling gaps. They get washed out on stretches and pitches because they can't shed blocks. I'm not saying the D-Line is faultless but I see countless times where the LB's are just getting handled in the run game.

Yep he does miss his gap quite a bit, but pointing him out in a whole corp (inc Micah) that cant stop the run does indicate its not individuals especially as on the TD its a blatant example of how the D-Line are giving the LB's too much.
Micah wasn't showing any sign of a injury on that play....more like he couldn't shake the Center with his 40lb advantage quickly enough.

The run game has been a problem here for years under different regimes and has yet to be fixed when a lots of armchair coaches here have id'd the problems associated with the run stopping failures of each. But old Jerry and his spawn have never taken any of their advice. So we continue this journey of not stopping the run and late in the game when it matters most, ditto. I come from the same high school as Billy Sims and we used to run him left, right and up the middle and have a ton of success. No team could stop him and it was a thing of poetry to see Billy run back then but when we ran into true elite defenses in the playoffs well lets just say Billy Sims was more or less nurtured and we were knocked out of the playoffs. People, aliens and fellow fans get this memo: This isn't a elite defense. They can't stop a cold. Until those in power does something about it it will continue on this path.

Yep, we've become obsessed (as the league has) with pass rushing, in recent years we've preferring two athletic 3 techs rather than anchor the whole run defense with a big 1-tech.
