Is Will McClay Overrated?

I have always thought we had a gem in McClay. Thought he was someone we could count on to make sure our draft was good, if not great. His misses with Taco, Tristan Hill and busts like that were few and far between. Lately, tho, his track record has not been good. Maybe he is a good drafter but gets overruled by the Jones boys? I just say an article saying that Howie Roseman has hit on every one of his top picks in the last few years. Definitely can't say that about our draft. What does everyone think?

It's been well documented so many times that he doesn't make the picks.

Hard to tell when he is only one of many voices in the draft room and Jerry makes the final call.

Seems like the scouting department is run well, and things only get messed up when they let coaches make the picks but who knows.

He decent enough the organization can sell you they don’t need to supplement his drafting with FA. But being forced to pick for need now, isn’t a recipe for success.

Its been well documented that Stephen and Marinelli made the Taco pick. We can't put that one on him

Even with some recent misses the cowboys draft really well overall. The issue is the cowboys have created a philosophy that is completely dependent upon the draft. This leaves them constantly picking for need, putting guys in positions to contribute day 1 instead of developing, and not having enough talent around them to succeed.

You guys just for some reason like to credit him for a good draft pick and blame Jerry for a bad one.

There's a reason why he refuses to interview anywhere else for an actual real GM job.

I'm going to let myself believe McClay is as good as people who like him say he is because that means the organization has some modicum of competency.

Still looking for someone else to blame not named Jerry and Stephen. Will McClay is good as his job. It's why he gets paid what he does. He could EASILY go somewhere and get money and the title.

Somebody has to., You make friends with college coaches, their coaching staff. Around the entire league, you listen ,you watch, you bring back your recommendations, and then they throw it out the window and take who they want anyways ,welcome to the Cowboys.

No, he’s not. We need to understand something, though.

No one lasts forever in this league. It’s highly competitive and always changing. McClay had a great decade-long run. That’s an eternity in the NFL. As usual, Jerry failed to maximize the opportunity.

No matter what anyone here says they don’t know what McClay does. We don’t know what picks belong to him.

What we do know is that drafting isn’t our issue. Lack of free agency is. And McClay isn’t in charge of that.

Based on what exactly? He considered among the best in the league.

He made the call on Mazi and so far that has not worked out so the answer is, maybe he is overrated. But he's pulled a few gems out of the middle rounds so that's a good thing.
