The Dallas Cowboys have attacked the safety position in the sixth round of their drafts on multiple occasions under the stewardship of personnel guru Will McClay. Just last year both starting safeties, Xavier Woods and Donovan Wilson were former Cowboys sixth-round picks. Israel Mukuamu was a cornerback at South Carolina, and while he did tell Jerry Jones on draft night they drafted the best corner available, that was not the plan the organization had in mind.

I can't name an elite or very good FS in recent years that is his size at 6'4... it makes quick changes of direction difficult. But I really hope it works out.

He's got a better shot than Wright because of the position change.

I view these two picks as Marinelli type nonsense. This is length porn for Quinn.

Why you would roll the dice on these two players when the odds are so heavily stacked against them is beyond me.

Especially when there was some serious talent avaliable in that 3rd round.

While the head coach and the "personnel guru" McClay continue to preach they're just looking for good football players.
Forget the reach for Wright. Mukuamu was a value pick. We missed on Chris Westry. This is a makeup.

As for your McClay slander, I will leave it to the floor to deal with you.

You probably don't know this but Westry was undrafted. You don't really miss on UDFAs. They're flyers.
You got me. I deserve it.

I don't know why I associated him with being drafted in the 7th round.

I guess that was during the last "long corners" craze with Richard.

You look at what Mukuamu did in college and it was very similar to Byron Jones. That's not to say he has the same traits or plays like Byron Jones, just that while Mukuamu was primarily an outside corner, he spent a lot of time playing a variety of roles including slot, high safety, and safety in the box. Like Jones, Mukuamu was also deceptively productive in college and a three year starter (opting out as a senior) and actually lead the team in interceptions his final two years ahead of Jaycee Horn.

In terms of style, as I mentioned, he's nothing like Jones. Where Jones was the freak of all freak explosive athletes, Mukuamu is not. Mukuamu is big (212lbs), tall (6'4) and long (34" arms) but his college tape showed what he was, a raw player who converted from safety in high school to corner in college.... with false steps in his play evident despite getting the job done. Byron Jones' footwork on the other hand was really clean. So it was surprising to see Mukuamu arrive at training camp with nice, clean footwork, noticeably better than he showed on tape and something he obviously worked on in his season off.

And this pre-season we've seen Mukuamu play a variety of roles just as Byron Jones did as a rookie. In pre-season Mukuamu played:
  • Slot - 60 snaps
  • Box safety - 41 snaps
  • Free safety - 30 snaps
  • LOS - 22 snaps
He actually did it at a pretty high level although a lot of his playing time came against scrubs. Just to be clear, I don't expect Mukuamu to play nearly as often as Byron Jones did but in Jones' rookie season we had Wilcox, Church and Jones play 800+ defensive snaps with Heath also playing 200+ defensive snaps. It's therefore not unrealistic to think our safeties might play a bigger overall role than most predict, and Mukuamu could progress through the season to being a semi-regular part of that and could already be a niche slot man coverage guy against big WR's and TE's and a player who comes in on passing downs in the RedZone.

I'm so glad the Cowboys kept Israel Mukuamu and moved him to Safety!

At 6'4 1/8", 205 lbs and ran the 40 in 4.34 coming out of high school (2018), Mukuamu has the potential to become a stud. Mukuamu played at 4 different positions in the DB field, and he looked pretty good this preseason. If he can keep improving and learn the Pro game well, he could end up being a diamond in the rough type of player for the Cowboys.

Excellent information @DanA ! Thank you.

I'm looking forward to seeing Mukuamu gain experience and improve on his game. If he does, he's going to be a very good find and productive player for the Cowboys.
