It is still about guaranteed money

Stop looking at AAV first-that always seems to be a talking point. Everything in NFL contracts revolves around guaranteed money.

According to ESPN:

1. Deshaun Watson (the absurd $230 million)
2. Joe Burrow $219M
3. Pat Mahomes $208M
4. Trevor Lawrence $200M
5. Justin Herbert $194M
6. Kyler Murray $190M

Tua just got $167M guaranteed. That is 8th in QB guaranteed money. These deals are not resetting the market-AT ALL. It’s really good money, and huge wealth for the player no doubt but not the one upping thing you sometimes hear. I expect that Tua’s concussion issues played a role here-but he’s tens of millions off from top guaranteed cash. This is the sticking point in basically every single contract in the league…

These guarantees will get played around with over the course of a player’s career depending on the team’s cap situation and the player’s production/play.

well, complainers will complain about averages. the past three years the complainers complained about Dak and his 40M average. all of them without exception changed this year and complained about the 59M cap hit and salary.

All Dak has to do is take us to the championship game. Then the sky's the limit
Raise your hand if you believe he could do that.

Not to undermine the importance of guaranteed money, but some of those numbers seem off, especially the Mahomes number.

He recently restructured his deal. Says $210M now fully guaranteed, up to $218M with incentives. Deals get more guaranteed money when the player performs well and the team’s salary cap allows it and the team has further need of the player.

This list is misleading because all 5 of those guys had 5th year options on their rookie contracts that might be included in the guaranteed. It’s not just what was in the contract, it’s what they had in guarantees total after signing the extension.

For instance, Jalen Hurts got 179m$ guaranteed that eclipsed Kyler Murray’s guarantees in his extension, but Jalen isn’t a first round pick so Kyler had the fifth year option that brought him up to that 190.

So Dak will be lower on this list even though his extension guarantees will beat everyone else’s

If he wasn't worth it at 40M why would anyone think he is suddenly worth it at 59M?

Good point, though reported AAV is not an honest number. It’s the guaranteed money that gives the real AAV. That’s why these numbers that you hear quoted are just silly numbers that do not represent the actual payout.
