Same old, same old.
The one thing that needs to change the most won't ever change, and that is the ownership.
Sad thing is, there is enough talent on the field. Except where it matters the most. Dak just ain't the dude. He's a slightly better than average QB. But the Cousins comparisons aren't going away. Can't get them over the hump.
As it is, we have another generation of Cowboy players that aren't going to get to a Super Bowl. Tyron and Zack. And I even have to put Lawrence in there. A lot of people give him grief but I think he gives everything he has on the field. He made some huge plays today. And I think we will find out he needs another surgery.
So, where do we go from here? Just off the top of my head, I think they restructure Dak and pick up 22m in cap space. He is here for 2 more years almost no matter what. Zeke is a cut. Picks up 5m now or if we make it a June 1st cut we pick up 11m. He has to go. Resign Pollard but don't reset the RB market. I have mixed feelings on Tyron, but if we let him go we pick up $10m. I let Schultz go, look to Ferguson, Hendershot and McKeon to be the TE's next year. I'd resign TY Hilton on the cheap, same with McGovern. Pray that Steele comes back to start next season. Ride with Farniok and Collins as backups. Draft a guy relatively high to compete for a starting spot at G.
On defense, Lawrence likely gets restructured, saving $10m. Resign Hankins. Look for an upgrade at LB but likely bring LVE back. He earned another year, but if he gets a big offer let him go. Joseph, Wright, Bohanna, and Ball won't really save any cap, but none of them can play. They need to go. Donovan Wilson is a must resign. The 4 safeties all should be back. I would look to trade Diggs for at least a second rounder. He is decent in coverage but gives up big plays AND is afraid to tackle.
Need a rookie K, and a rookie P, or go back and get the young kid we cut last year. Turpin is on a minimum deal so there would be no savings, but I think he was just as much a negative as he was a positive.
Finally, in the draft, look for a QB to groom behind Dak, so he is ready to step in when Dak is gone. We have picks in every round but 6, and are expected to get a 4th and two 6ths as comp picks. We have some decent draft capital. We need a QB, RB, WR, OL, DT, LB and CB.
I think it is time for Kellen Moore to go. He might be great somewhere else, but I don't think he ever will be here. I'd love for Quinn to stay, but chances are he is going to leave to be a head coach again. I feel like there are a lot of good DC's out there that could have a lot of success with the guys we have. Fangio is the name that comes first but there are many others. McCarthy? I just don't know. Put together two good regular seasons only to fail pretty miserably both times. He probably should get a pass, but that brings me to the elephant in the room.
Sean Payton. It's time. Since we are going to be stuck with Dak for 2 more years, let's give the QB whisperer a chance to work his magic. He would be worth giving up a first rounder for. And even a little more. We justifiably could lose both coordinators. Even without a first rounder next year, there is enough talent to make the playoffs. And with the cuts and restructures I made above, we would have the cap space to make improvements through free agency that would fit what Payton wants to do. Jerruh has always said he has been paid off the most when he has taken the biggest risk. It's now or never IMO.
