I've railed about the lack of investment in DT

Can't make that argument anymore. Never thought they'd use a #1 on a DT and then they surprise me. The war room was interesting because it seemed like McCarthy wanted to go another direction but they stuck with their guns and went DT.

Not sure I would have used 26 on Smith but he's a plugger in the run and has enough athleticism that maybe with some coaching, can be a pocket collapser and help the ege rushers in passing situations.

Not as flashy as a 3-tech pass rusher, but it’s a nice, safe, clean pick. Good NT’s tend to have long careers; while he may not make many pro bowls, he’s a guy who could very well be starting for Dallas 8 years from now, and that’s what you want out of a pick like this.

McCarthy wanted a lineman…scouts wanted to stick to their board.

Time will tell, but anytime we draft defense,I'm happy,so glad we didn't go the Te route.imo the only thing we need on offense is og and rb.

Even though it was small, the trade for Hankins could have been an indicator that they were going to get more serious about the position. Kind of smacked of desperation.

THIS is the difference between Garrett and good coaching. Between MM and Quinn they are consistently addressing the proper weaknesses and getting rid of the over priced aging veterans that no longer pull their weight.

If it is true that KC wanted to trade up to take him then that could have forced the Cowboys hand. And if Andy Reid wanted him that is a good enough endorsement for me.

I think Andy could probably envision that Smith and Jones could potentially be the most lethal front in football.

Maybe he turns into Dallas' Fletcher Cox also. That would be great for Dallas...bad for your Eagles. :)

But you may got your new Fletcher as well in Carter.

He plays a bit different position as nose tackle. Not too many 320+ players could pass rush like Fletch. But who knows? Maybe he creates his own unique story

Run stuffers never get the praise and hola that other positions get on the D, but when you have a good one you see no one complaining then, only when they are drafted.

Same here, it always seemed to be a lesser priority.

I would have been OK with an OL too.

Its just one pick and they likely had a second round grade on him given that SJ said they only had 15 players with first round grades.

The one thing I like about this pick, whether Mazi pans out or not, is that the FO is finally listening to football guys. If anything, I'll have to give McCarthy his props for finally getting us out of the Jerry Jones project era. We didn't waste a 1st rounder on a flashy tight end. We no longer have any Jerry Jones project coaches. If we actually draft a football guy with no red flags and not some guy with an injury history or character concerns, I'll be extremely impressed.
