Jaguars bid farewell to John Henderson

Posted by Michael David Smith on April 26, 2010 8:15 AM ET
John Henderson is about to leave the only team he's ever played for.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Jacksonville will release Henderson today.

The Jaguars had been shopping Henderson in a trade, and Schefter reports that the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants had expressed some interest. But now he'll become an unrestricted free agent.

The Jaguars used their top two draft picks on defensive tackles, which made it clear that they wanted to get younger at the position. Henderson had two years and $11 million left on his contract.

The 31-year-old Henderson was drafted by the Jaguars in 2002 and has been a starter on their defensive line ever since. He has missed only four games in eight seasons, but now he'll have to find a new trainer to slap him in the face every Sunday.

Henderson and Marcus Stroud used to be holy terrors back in the day. Hard to imagine the Jags wanting to get younger and moving on like that.

Henderson was a guy most mocks had going to us in 2002.

Hayneworth is what Henderson was supposed to be. I haven't kept up with him at all, but I'm guessing his performance hasn't been too good of late if the Jags are releasing him.

Jax drafting Tyson Alualu probably sealed his fate.

I know every time some big name player is released there are a bunch of guys wanting Dallas to sign him BUT I would definitely consider bringing him in as a 3-4 DE. Dude is 6'7" 335 lbs and has no history of being a problem player.

If he's looking for a big payday then I say pass but if he's looking to play for a Superbowl contender and for an alrwdy good D he would be an upgrade over Spears. I wouldn't be surprised if New England makes a run at him.

The Jags drafted four Defensive Lineman (two DE, two DT) this year and had an all-rookie DT in Terrance Knighton--who was the only bright spot on that line a year ago. They also brought in Kampman and are hoping Harvey continues to develop. So, yes, the line has been overhauled.
Time to move on, Henderson.

would we consider him here? and hopefully NYG don't sign him, they don't need anymore DL.

I doubt we'd consider him cause he's going to want to be a starter and he's simply not going to start here with Jay on the roster.

It's possible that he could start here. If we move Spears and he plays at DE, he could start.

He is a 4-3 guy not a 3-4 guy so I doubt he signs with KC. It doesn't seem like a good fit.

He is not going to sign as a backup and Ratliff is too good to move to DE. My money is on the Titans signing him, their defense went from one of the best to one of the worst when they lost Fat Albert.

Neither one of their current DTs are anything to write home about.

Giants showing interest in John Henderson

4/27/2010 6:05:55 AM

Gary Myers and Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News report the Giants have "kicked the tires" on former Pro Bowl defensive tackle John Henderson, according to an NFL source, and could be interested in signing him. The 31-year-old was cut by the Jaguars and will begin making free-agent visits in Kansas City Tuesday.

Henderson, who just turned 31, was a first-round pick of Tom Coughlin's Jaguars back in 2002. Coughlin still likes him enough that, a report said, he attempted to trade for the 6-7, 335-pounder during the NFL draft.

How many defensive lineman does that team need?

Henderson would be a terror at Spears DE spot. Imagine Rat between two monsters (6'7 335 and 6'6 320).

I'm ambivalent about bringing him here to play DE. If he were a few years younger it'd be worth it for sure.
