Jason Williams anxious for Sunday to come

Rookie linebacker Jason Williams, the Cowboys' first pick in the April draft, has not played since Oct. 11 at Kansas City but will be back on the field Sunday against San Diego because of the injury to tight end Martellus Bennett.

With John Phillips expected to see more tight end work, the Cowboys need to fill in some special teams' holes and Williams will get the call.

"Hopefully I can lock down a job on special teams and get that going," said Williams, who did not make a tackle in either of his two appearances this year.

Williams admits the transition to inside linebacker has been difficult, as has been watching.

"The first few weeks were really hard because at that point I didn't understand why," Williams said. "But as it's gone on I've just taken it as a learning experience."

Coach Wade Phillips said Williams has made strides even if it hasn't been in games.

"I think he's learning to be a pro and that takes a little while for some guys," Phillips said. "He's learned to work in practice and make plays in practice that can carry over to him being able to play. He's played a lot of scout team work but he's working with our defense. We work him in our defensive calls. I see him getting better and better. I like his attitude."

If Williams ends up on the field on defense I hope he gets the chance to rush because he showed explosiveness in the preseason.

Noooice. Been waiting for this kid to make an appearance later in the season. He has some serious potential. Once he learns the game some more and gets some real snaps he'll be a solid MLB. He's certainly got the speed to cover a lot of ground. I keep watching his highlight reel of him hitting that QB in college and thinking dayum. Kid has jets!

I hope this kid shows something, the 2009 draft has not been looking good so far. I hated the draft at first (I usually do) but then I calmed down. Unfortunately, outside of David Buehler and maybe John Phillips no one has made weekly contributions.

I initially thought Williams was too small to play ILB in a 3-4 but he is almost the exact same size as Ray Lewis. He appears to be a willing hitter and has really good speed. I feel like he has this year and next to learn from Keith Brooking before he will be counted on to start.

I liked the fact that he caused so many fumbles in college> We need some turnovers. I don't think he will get on the field much this year, but thinking future.

The whole draft class was busted...

This was the downside to carrying two kickers all year, one of whom is making them at 60% clip. For J Williams it has been a lost year. What a shame, based on what I saw in the pre-season he could have been a beast on the inside blitz, bet he would not whiff on tackles either.

Yeah, the Cowboys need him active and on special teams for sure.

Plus, he is a pressure player, and he can run.

I predicted that he would have Carpenter's job by Thanksgiving.

The injury ruined that hope.

Still, I think this guy will start one day for Dallas.
