Jason Witten, Best TE in the NFL

One thing that occurs to me each time I watch this video is the very classy move by #57 on his tackle method. You can tell he purposely tackled him in a way to cause the least amount of risk of injury to Witten's head. No one ever mentions that it seems.

An excellent point. You can see he could have nailed him, but adjusted and went down low for a leg tackle that Jason could take the impact on his shoulder pads.

Chris Gocong?

EDIT: Yep, Chris Gocong.

Good point indeed.

Football players may be aggressive as heck, yes. But not animals. What Gocong did was purely an instinctual play based on the fact he was tackling a player without a helmet. I think that's the play 95% of NFL players would make in a similar situation. I dont think any player wants to deliberately injure another player, especially one without proper protection.

He is one of the greats for certain. We looked long and hard for the next Jay Novacek. I cannot honestly imagine us finding another Jason Witten. It's a great thing to see him play, and is still young.
I David LeFleuer had not got hurt, we might not have been looking.

I almost went ballistic when we passed on him in round 2 of that Draft. I could not believe he was still there in the 3rd round. If we had passed on him again, I swear to you Jerry would have needed the jaws of life to remove my foot from his trash.

That Draft ended up being pretty good for us. 3 starters, Newman, Witten and James.

All year there were posts about how he was on the decline or that he must have some sort of mystery injury that the team is not disclosing. Not that a team can get away without disclosing this kind of stuff in today's NFL.

Then the team says that Witten has sustained an actual injury and is a maybe for the Thanksgiving day game. He then goes out, plays through the real injury and produces his best two games of the season. What is not to love about this guy?

It may take Witten breaking the NFL record for receptions by a TE this year for Dallas to win a few more games this season. They will be facing likely shoot outs with the Chargers and Saints the next two weekends. I am rooting for him although Dallas Clark is currently on a pace to break the record as well and has 4 more receptions than Witten right now.

The Cowboys have to face another great tight end this Sunday in Antonio Gates who has 67 receptions for an incredible 994 yards. This is a great era for talented tight ends in the NFL.

Hes only 27 too.

When its all said and done he'll prolly have the most receptions ever and he is most likely going to end up in Canton.

I hate that word.

I think Witten is a great Tight end, he's a tough.... man. He runs great routes has solid hands. But I think I'd take 1 tight end over him Antonio Gates for the simple factor he doesnt really need to get open for him to come down with the ball. Ive never seen a tight end , because he's so tall and big , and a former basketball player come down with so many jump balls as him.He will be tough for us this week because of that. Our guys shouldnt go for the pick just the knock down . Also Gates is much better after the catch, he breaks alot more tackles then witten.

So Gates is alittle better to me then witten .

Just like Tony G. when he was with the Chiefs, his career is being wasted in Dallas. Hope the guy can catch on somewhere with a team that can compete in the post season. He deserves better than Dallas.

And here's the top five of all-time, regardless of position --

1. Randy Moss, 574
2. Larry Fitzgerald, 509 (one year and four games remaining)
3. Jason Witten, 502 (four games remaining)
4. Andre Johnson, 486
5. Andre Rison, 475

Larry came in really young didn't he?

I know Witten came in pretty young but I thought Larry was way young.

Still though, if he stays healthy and gets decent QB play, he's gonna have a lot of catches and a lot of time left when the end of next year rolls around.

What a great player. It would be a shame if he never tasted some playoff success.

All Time Cowboys Receptions

1. Michael Irvin...750
2. Jason Witten...502
3. Drew Pearson...489

All Time TE Receptions

1. Tony Gonzalez...976
2. Shannon Sharpe...815
3. Ozzie Newsome...662
4. Kellen Winslow...541
5. Frank Wycheck...505
6. Jason Witten...502

With 4 more receptions he will move into 5th all time.

By season's end he could catch Winslow if he averaged 10 receptions per game. Not impossible, but highly unlikely.

He has 73 receptions on the season.

27 more for 100 receptions. His best is 96 in 2007. Right now he projects to end up with 97.

29 more would tie the all time record for TEs in one season with 102.

30 more would break the record. That is just under 8 receptions per game.

Don't know about anyone else, but I am rooting for him to get the record.

I'm always rooting for Witten to do anything and everything special in his career. He's easily one of my all time favorite Cowboys.

They both were 21 during their rookie season, although Witten turned 21 a few months earlier before his rookie season than Fitzgerald did before his.
