Witten received the honor Tuesday evening after leading the Liberty Christian Warriors (Argyle, Texas) to a 10-2 record, a district championship, and a trip to the regional round of the TAPPS Division II tournament. He took over as head coach prior to the 2021 season which was filled with early adversity and finished with a 2-8 regular season. The eight-win improvement was one of the largest in TAPPS, the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools.

His is a private school so high school kids can be, and are recruited from anywhere. I don’t know if he won more games because of his coaching abilities or if he won because of his name attracting better players to attend that school,

(For those who don’t understand what I just said, In Texas HS football, private schools don’t play in public school playoffs.)

Because they have their own playoffs.

I wonder if Texas was the first state to pass the restrictions on public HS football eligibility. Serious business in the Lone Star State.

Liberty Christian is one of the most expensive private schools in TX with tuition around 30K per year. It’s the same school that Sean Payton’s kids went too and he coached briefly while on suspension that was made into the Keven James movie.

They do have their own playoffs, but that is not why the playoffs are separate. They are separate so public schools (who cannot legally recruit players) will not have a competitive disadvantage. It costs a lot to go to private high school, but those schools also provide scholarships if they want a particular student in their program.
With that said, coach of the year at any level is an accomplishment.

I’m in Oklahoma, and my impression is that public schools recruit and everyone is on scholarship.
