Here is a story on Johnny Carson. It talks about his hate for "Reality" TV. Anyway, I thought he was the best TV host ever. No one is even close. PBS is going to air a 2 hour documentary on him next Monday at 8PM CT. Thought I would post for those of us who grew up with him and for those that would like to know what a TV host is supposed to be.

You can find all kinds of great Carson clips on YouTube. If you get the time find the one where Don Rickles breaks his cigarette box or find the one with Johnny and Dolly parsons both are good for a laugh.

Seen them both and you are right, they are hilarious. He tracked Rickles down on the set of his show "CPO Sharkey". Classic.

I love those old shows too. I am curious though. Wasn't he already long gone before reality tv?

ok thanks. I was wrong then because I thought he had passed about 15 years ago. Appreciate it!

He retired some time before that.

I remember reading once that off the show he was not known for being funny; was a bit of an introvert with few close friends. Much like Lucille Ball who was also not the funny gal off set that Lucy Ricardo was. I like those old collectible shows. I don't even watch the late night talk shows.

Like when Walter Cronkite retired I stopped watching Late Night TV the same as I stopped watching the network evening news shows.

You look at Johnny Carson then the losers we are stuck with now and it truly is a case of the past being much better then the present.

Johnny was and still is the best mainly because he didn't make the show about him. The show was about the guests. Yes he had his bits in the show but it was mainly about the guests.

And I agree with him about "reality" tv

What was great about him was that he could be the funny guy or he could be the straight man in a comedy routine.

Johnny's best asset was that he was "everyman" and we could all identify with him. I loved when he would have Ruth Gordon on. He would only have to introduce her and then she would just do her thing. He would just sit there, elbow on the desk and let'er go. I don't think that there's ever been quite the combination of Johnny, Ed McMahon and Doc Severinsen. (BTW, you can still hear Severinsen play second trumpet on the theme from CBS Sunday morning)

He ended his career with class and dignity and never sullied his image by doing anything other than being Johnny Carson, middle class kid from Nebraska.

i loved when the monologue was not getting many laughs and johnny would pull the overhead microphone down and say:

"is this thing on?"

lol!!

he was easily the best.
