Johnny Gaudreau, NHL player, hit & killed by driver

Drunk driving and drunk driving related accidents need to carry heavier punishments. With Uber, Lyft, and public transit are available, there's no excuse to drive drunk.

I am a big hockey guy and from NY so this was big news this weekend around here. Just an awful tragedy. The wives responses have been tough to read. Clearly they were great guys. Sister’s wedding too. Almost too tough to wrap your head around. Way way way too young. God bless their families.

Agreed.

1st DWI should be a year in prison with hard labor.

2nd DWI should be liftetime in prison with hard labor or the death penalty.

Drunk drivers are selfish piles of crap and it’s completely inexcusable!

Especially when you consider the alternatives to driving nowadays compared to when the dwi/dui laws were first created (then again, buses and trains have been around a long time).

He tries to pass a slower car. The slower car was giving the bikers more space, so it appeared to the drunk that he was trying to block him from passing. So what does the drunk do? Passes on the right. When you're blasted you have that tunnel vision. You cannot be driving like that.

In the state of NJ he can get 10 years for each count. Which is absurd. This state does not differentiate between death by drunk or reckless driver. Going by the judges we have here, he'll probably get two counts of 10 run concurrently. Eligible for parole in 3 years. How does that make sense?

There's a twist. He's a Major in the National Guard. He's not active, so apparently the Uniform Code of Military Justice doesn't apply. However, he is subject to administrative regulations and procedures governing soldier conduct beyond the civilian criminal justice system. Whatever that means.

I think suspension of license too.
First 6 months out of jail, no license. Learn to ride a bike, or pay for uber

Vehicular homicide while drunk in NJ can get you 5 years to a life suspension. He was not only driving drunk, but recklessly as well. He would probably qualify for life. But I don't know is BAC level. Going by what he did, I'm assuming it was way over the limit. Even someone buzzed could see the situation around him. He had tunnel vision. He was blasted. He was also drinking while he was driving.
