Howard disrespects anthem in YouTube video

DALLAS -- A YouTube video from a charity flag football game in July has Dallas Mavericks' forward Josh Howard embroiled in controversy yet again.


The video, from Allen Iverson's event, shows Howard, as the national anthem is being sung, saying: "'The Star-Spangled Banner' is going on. I don't celebrate this [expletive]. I'm black." Howard also makes a hard-to-hear reference to Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said, according to the Dallas Morning News, that the team dealt with Howard at the time of the incident. He added that the team has a plan in place to address the issue at training camp.

"That said, we will be going through some advanced communication-skill sessions together this training camp," Cuban said Tuesday. "I have explained to him that cellphone cameras are not your friend and that what you think you said on camera is never what people will hear when it shows up on YouTube or TV."

Also in July, Howard was arrested and charged with speeding (94 mph in a 55 mph zone), careless and reckless driving, and speed competition in North Carolina. He was been released from the Forsyth County jail on a written promise to appear in court Sept. 23.

In that incident, police said an officer saw a black Lexus and a silver Volkswagen speeding along U.S. 421. The officer stopped the Lexus, and Howard was identified as the driver.

Last year, Howard admitted he is an occasional marijuana user. And in 2006, Howard opted out of playing for the U.S. Olympic team program, reportedly because he said it conflicted with his summer training camps.

And why haven't they traded this guy? I heard they had a chance to trade him for Ron Artest before the Rockets grabbed him. Artest has his issues, but I would take him over Howard.

I wanted to trade him last season somehow (maybe in a deal for Richard Jefferson).

But now his trade value is terrible. The only thing we can do is just to play him, hope he plays well enough to up his value.

I dont like what he said, however, he does have a right to his views.....so many have fought, bled, and died so we can have the right to express ourselves freely. Unfortunately, sometimes the only thing that gets expressed is negativity and hate. I come from a military family for many generations. My family has fought in many wars....Texas Independence, WWI, WWII, Vietnam, Korea......I respect our flag and our anthem.....I stand at attention and I sing with pride. I get teary eyed thinking about the sacrifices of my family and others just so I could enjoy each day that I enjoy.

I just don't get Howard's mindset. I am curious how a multimillionaire bashes the very country that allowed to go to a very nice university (Wake Forest) and then become a very rich person.

If he hates America so much....and if he feels oppressed because he is "Black" then get the heck out. Leave your money behind and go back to Africa, to the Motherland. Go play in the jungles of West Africa, the Sahara of Northern Africa, the drought riddled East Africa, or the racially oppressive South Africa. Go deal with extreme hunger, poverty, disease, violence, political unrest and just all around brutal living conditions. Leave his jaded behind over there for a month and I guarantee he will be whistling a different tune and will be begging to come back and respect the National Anthem and the values this country stands for.

Is America perfect, NO. It still has a long, long way to go. However, Howard's actions spit on the legacy of people like Douglas, Tubman, MLK Jr., Muhammad Ali, the Glory Road team, Jackie Robinson, The Buffalo Soldiers, the Tuskegee Airmen, etc.....

Now like I said, he has every right to have his views and he has every right to express them, at least IMO. However, I hope he understands that his words come with backlash and consequences in today's society.

I believe that this is more about a stupid kid mugging for his peers more then somebody who has actually thought about the issues this country has and how he fits them into his personal beliefs. Unfortunatly, young people do stupid stuff without every really thinking about what there actions mean all to often. By no means am I excusing his horrid behavior but what I am saying is that I don't think he's really mature enough or perhaps even intelligent enough to understand the ramafications of what he said. In his mind, he was dogging it up at Allen's thing and making the most of his opportunity to act a fool with his associates. Very thoughtless, indeed but also pretty typical of young people. Not really an excuse for such behavior but probably more true then anything else. Now would have been about the time my parents would have taken me aside and kicked the holy living crap out of me, and rightly so. Then, my father would have set me down and had a long talk with me about how many people, not just our people, but how many people in general, have sacraficed limbs, sanity and in may cases, there very lives, to provide me with an opportunity to live free. Basic good manners and the fact that I am representing my family, my town and my people at all times would have been driven home. It would be very unfortunate if this same kind of thing didn't happen with Howard but who knows? I hope that there are people around him who can make the very necessary adjustments to his recent behavior.

Good question. I would say it's because his value is so low, but this is like subprime mortgage loans on Wall Street. It started out as HOT HOT HOT. Then it turned bad. But they didn't get rid of them because they were worth pennies on the dollar. Then you couldn't give them away. Now they're toxic.

Let's not go much further down that road. I'd like to say we can play this season out and he'll either turn it around and we keep him or we can get something of value in return via a trade. But another voice tells me, "take the pennies".
