Just for fun: Asomugha For our 1st Rounder?

You take advantage of the uncapped year and restructure. I think he would be more than willing to restructure to have a shot at a Ring.

I don't.

Naughty Awesome Wah isn't an over the hill veteran hoping to win a ring in his final pro season.

He's in his prime.

Why would he agree to restructure unless we were going to pay him more?

"More" in the sense of adding years to a contract, yes. I think anyone offered the chance out of the black hole and to join a winner would jump at it for a slightly discounted price. I am not saying we would get him for a mid level tender. Yes, he would still be paid for the caliber of player he is but, adding 5-6 years to a contract saves you yearly and gives him more in the end.

As the title states: if the Raiders offered us Asomugha for our first round pick, would you take him?

What would we do with him? I'm assuming you would say start him ahead of Newman, but what would you do with Newman? He's too good to cut and he'd be a waste as just a nickel back.

So no, I wouldnt trade our 1st rd pick for him.

I don't think moving a 32 year old cornerback, who has had durability issues the last two years, to nickleback is a waste. I think it would add longevity to his career, add depth and solidify our pass defense. I don't think anyone in this draft would have the immediate impact Asomugha would. If Jerry wants a ring in his castle next season, this would be a better option than any draft pick.

Before anyone gets defensive, I am not bagging on Newman. This is all in fun.

Exactly.

That'd give us two aging cornerbacks with big money deals who'd never see the end of their contracts.

What durability issue last year did he have? He started every game and had 3 picks and 18 passes defensed. The two years prior, he did miss some games with what was a significant injury, they were the kind of thing that you'd describe as something an older, beaten down gets. He's in terrific shape. He's still a top of the lone starter.

With this line of thinking, why dont we call new England and offer them our 1st rd pick for Tom Brady, then we can improve the QB position by having Romo be a backup to Bradfy and Kitnas as the #3 guy.

There is such a thing as overkill. Newman makes alot of money and is still a good starter. Jenkins will have to get paid one day in the not too distant future. Asomugha has got to get paid big $$$.

He still had nagging effects from the groin. Generally when players get injuries associated with beat down older players, it is because they are on the other side of their prime and nagging injuries will continue to linger.

Actually, there was no "line of thinking." It is an all in fun post. If there had been a line of thinking, this would be so far out of the realm of possibility it isn't even fathomable nor in need of rebuttal. If you want to mock my already light-hearted scenario, come up with something logical. You may not agree, but my scenario is logical and feasible. Yours is ludicrous.

There is never such thing as overkill when talent ont he football field is involved. When did you start paying the bills? As a fan I don't have to worry about the financial ramifications, just the result put on the field. Even more so when I am just having a little fun.

Obviously, Jerry isn't going to get himself into a situation where he is handicapped for the extended future. I do however think he would take on financial peril if he thought it would put us closer to a ring and that he could cut ties later. Signing Asomugha to an extension and then trading/cutting Newman after a season or two, when his play is returning diminishing rewards, isn't out of the realm of possibility. Yes, I think Newman will be playing far below his contract in two seasons.

I appreciate Newman and what he has done and realize how under-appreciated he has been by most. Having him in the nickle with Jenkins and Asomugha on the outside would make whoever was playing safety moot though and allow our front seven to really pin their ears back even more.

I didnt notice it if he did.

Sure its ludicrous, but when CB isnt a problem here why would we give up our 1st rd pick and reduce the role of a quality starter to get a guy that wouldnt make THAT much difference. If we had a hole there, it would. But we dont.

There's no cap this yr, but there will be when the new deal gets done.

We'll see. But Asomugha is getting up there in age too.

I'm not sure it would. They still would have a problem forcing turnovers because the safeties dont make enough plays. Again CB hasnt been a problem, especially last year. Adding another good one probably isnt going to change the number of turnovers dramatically. Teams will still find ways to exploit the issue we have, and have had for several seasons.

I did. His explosion wasn't there and he wasn't getting up as much. He was a liability on 3rd downs because of this.

Runningback isn't a liability but if I could get Jim Brown in his prime for the 27th pick, I would do it in a jiff.

I just don't get it when fans get up in arms about the cap. We aren't paying the salaries or balancing the cap. Let the guys who get paid to do it worry about that.

This is actually a good point and somewhat negates one of yours from earlier. This is one of the reason I think we could get him to restructure.

Look at it this way. Asomugha is a better cover corner than Newman, IMO. Allowing us to play in the box more and blitz more. This leads to better run defense (hopefully). This means more 2nd/3rd and long downs. That leads to more nickle and dime play. With those three in nickle/dime Ware and Spencer would have that much longer to get to the quarterback. That leads to more sacks, pressure, fumbles and forced throws for interceptions. No, it's not an exact science but nothing is

Now, I have no issues with Newman and I am not looking to replace. It was just an interesting scenario that popped into my head. I appreciate your honesty and diligence.

No. Only because he's an older corner, and I have no idea when he will start to fall off. He would be our best corner, but he would cost too much. The salary cap will be back and we have other players to re-sign. Plus Newman is still a good corner and I am happy to keep him starting.
