We’ll see. Would have liked to seen more movement in free agency to help Zimm get the right unit. They did it for DQ his first year. Zimm gets to ride the same bus into mediocrity as McCarthy and Dak. Coaching is important but players are what make the game. Not enough run stoppers or too many undersized players will stop Zimm’s hopes fast. Scary depth issues on that front seven.

But we have no idea how it will work out with the current players.
What did not work under DQ can be much different under MZ.

I know the atmosphere here is always negative, but I am not a doom and gloom person to say it will not be better, as we just do not know.

Just being realistic. LBs certainly better but zero depth. And I’m not sure we did anything to fix DT unless our late rounder this year shocks everyone. This defense fed off those turnovers, especially DQ’s first years, so while Zimm will bring more discipline not sure if it will be enough. We’ll see…. I always liked Zimm and consider him a Parcells Boy, so rooting for him.

We'll find this out during the season when we play against tougher teams that we've struggled with over the years

Unfair to make assumptions on how much better he'll be and how things will be different based on what???

I'm not being negative Nancy but if he's learning some things, imagine how long it could take some other players and more importantly, the entire defense. My point is the D may struggle a bit first few games.

If we are being honest, Zimm is truly behind the eight ball. He has 1 year to install his scheme, and be successful, with Quinn players.......that's a lot. IF I were him, I wouldn't bother installing my scheme, you don't all your pieces or enough time. Just tweak Quinn's system to address the running issues from last season.

Fair point. A good chunk of these guys had three years under DQ to gel and become familiar with the scheme. I’d encourage everyone to be patient with this unit in a similar way to how we really needed to be patient with the offense last year. Only bad news about that is two of the first three games we get Cleveland and Baltimore….

Need LB's to stay healthy this year. Last year was ridiculous.
What was more ridiculous is using safeties far too often and far too much as hybrid linebackers and that's what needs to change I mean occasionally short throw in a wrinkle where you bring in a guy like bell or Thomas as a linebacker and a specific package but it can't be part of your regular defense should be a nice change just having your traditional linebacker roles defined..

Zim already has his linebackers turned around and control of the defense now rests in the hands of is already fully trained middle linebacker fully up to speed and reading applications.

The middle of field is already a hard part of the defensive field to defeat, now.

The fact Kendricks admits there are some new things even he is trying to figure out concerns me. Remember when MM was hired, he said it would be easier for him ( 1person ) to immediately learn Kellen system than ask 55 players to learn his system. This is my concern with Zimm. I'm not saying he should learn Quinn's system, but you don't have a lot of defense players thinking too much.

Zimmer is going to have to coach the crap out of this defense. They have some depth and talent issues at LB and their interior DL is arguably one of the least talented in the NFL. If Mazi Smith doesn't make a big leap this year, they are in REAL trouble at DT. Real trouble.

I think this is a classic case of Jerry and Stephen thinking that the right coach will save them from themselves and their cheapness.

At least Zimmer looks like he has a secondary to work with so it's not all terrible.

That ship sailed. LOL.

They are so thin and weak at DT. It's mindnumbing what their approach here is.
The D has good to really good pieces at each position EXCEPT DT (Osa disappears after around Week 6). Unless Rogers pulls a Jay Ratliff and becomes an unbelievable find in Round 7, I'm just not sure what that group is gonna give the team.
