I just heard this story at Church today or I would have shared it before.

There's a guy I go to Church with who is a former MMA fighter. He recently closed his local training facility and gym because his rent was going up again and he's kind of tired of the fight game. I'm not going to mention his name but I will tell you that he is in his early 40's and is about 5'6" and 150 pounds. So not a big guy at all.

About a year ago, a man in his late 20's and is huge started coming to Church. His name is Angel and he's about 6'4", 260 pounds. Angel is a street fighter and he let me and a couple of guys know that he wants to be an MMA fighter. He thinks with the proper training he will dominate because of his size.

Well, I told him that we have a guy at Church who was a fighter and trainer. He couldn't wait to be introduced. So we introduce him to our friend. He wrestled in High School, but had no martial arts or boxing training. The first advice he was given was to stop dreaming that his size was going to carry him in MMA.

Angel kind of sneered at this advice and basically said he pitied anyone who got into the ring with him because he was going to let all his rage out in every fight.

So he started training at my friend's facility, and from what I hear he was a little amazed at how hard they train before they ever step into the ring. He had to get his cardio up to last 5 minutes as you MMA fans all know.

Angel kept complaining about all the cardio work and no ring work. He wanted to show what he could do even without the cardio. He was a street fighter with very real rage. No one was going to stand a chance.

I guess he was so insistent on it that my friend finally told him to get in the ring with him just for some contact work. The first thing he told him was that from a foot away he could punch him in the body and put him on his butt. Angel said, "No way." So my friend told him to get ready and when he said he was, he put him on his butt gasping for air. One punch from a foot away by a man who was about 110 pounds lighter.

Angel couldn't believe it. "Lucky punch." So they got ready and did it again. Same result. My friend asked him, "How's that rage helping you get air right now?"

Angel, still apparently not getting it announced that he only needed to work on his boxing defense so he wouldn't get hit like that. I am told that for the next half hour he tapped out about a dozen times as time after time my friend tied him in knots like a human pretzel. Apparently he was real susceptible to a rear naked choke and it got so bad that as soon as he was in it he was tapping out because he could not get out of it and it was scaring him.

Just thought you guys who are fans of the sport might get a kick out of the story. I did.

I hope no one takes the story wrong. I am not trying to bag on Angel at all. He's a nice kid. I just think it is amusing that a man 14 to 15 years older and a lot smaller took him to school like that. Angel moved to Yuma and I guess he is still training there. I wish him luck if he ever gets a shot.

Some folks have to learn the hard way. Hopefully the kid finally got it and took the lessons to heart.

If he didn't then he's not going to go very far in MMA anyway.

Your natural reaction to getting punched in the face on the ground is to turn away so everyone is susceptible in a rear naked choke until they learn to ignore that instinct.
