Kirk Cousins seemingly to be released before next season

What's absurd is to think Arthur Blank had no idea his GM was going to use a 1st pick to draft a QB.....the most expensive position in football.
As far as I know most owners don't involve themselves with player evaluation or acquisition. They leave that up to the scouts and GM. That's why they hire a GM. The video is probably an explanation as to why they picked a QB when they just paid one. The explanation was probably to his liking. It is reading tea leaves, but that's what it looked like.

I agree Flamma ....I never said they did. The original poster suggested Arthur Blank had no idea his team was going got select Penix with its first-round pick and disagree 100%. No GM makes a 1st round selection, especially top 15-20 without owner running it back his owner. Some do as a requirement and some out of courtesy. I mean sure GMs are hired to build the team but it's still the owner's money and if you are about to invest an expensive position on the team, you run if by the owner. As for the Falcons........their GM invested $100M in Cousin and wanted to draft a top 10 QB but according to the poster, Blank had no idea.........nonsense and noticed I had not said approval but was in the loop, no question IMO.

Like Jerry wanting Manziel instead of Zack Martin
That's a problem because he's actually our GM. No way he puts the same work in as a hired GM. Jerry is at liberty to do as little or as much as he wants. A hired GM does not have that luxury.

I don't know what Blank knew. But that conversation after the pick seem to suggest an explanation of the pick. It doesn't mean I'm right. But a lot of people are assuming it took Blank a bit by surprise. By no means is that a guarantee.

Picking the QB really has no negative dollar value. It isn't costing Blank any more money than had they picked a WR. He doesn't have to give Penix a second contract. The offensive lineman picked before Pennix got more money. The WR picked after him got roughly the same.

Have you read Blank comments regarding the pick? It's the owner's own words vs 3-4 people guessing what they think ( not heard ) MAY have been said. Too much of a reach for me........

So you don't think owners are in the loop or aware of what possible player(s) and/or positions his GM will select in the 1st round. Hell, if I recall lots of times owners are right there in the draft room and to say they have no idea?

In that case, since we did take Martin, Jerry didn't overrule anyone.

For the most part, regardless of what some on this board think, Jerry doesn't overrule on draft day.
However, he may serve as an "all else equal" tie-breaker.

If anything, he sometimes lets his coaches have too much say compared to McClay's draft staff.
Think Rod Marinelli pet cats (Trysten Hill, Taco Charlton)

And DQ special cases Kelvin Joseph & Nashon Wright

I have read his words. What he was told probably made a lot of sense to him. I thought the Penix pick was good. You need a post cousins QB. But if I' made to pay a QB 100M, I need an explanation as to why you just picked a QB in the first round. But again, this is reading tea leaves.

that's interesting, i could see him doing a Russel Wilson like deal and go to some place like SF for piss cheap, since Kyle loves him and its better than paying Brock 50-60m/yr

That would work for one year, but then what? You can't bounce Purdy for one year. They're going to have to pay Purdy that money. The challenge is keeping the required talent around him.

Agreed. Cousins in SF makes a lot of sense. Paying Purdy 50-60M makes no sense.

I think it just depends if they think purdy is with that much given it impacts all the positions around him. In this scenario I’m saying they either move off purdy which admittedly is risky, or they make a miracle and quit paying every next qb top of the market.

He isn't worth it. It's about youth at this point, not so much talent. Now they play the numbers game. How many years do you think Cousins has left? If they do the Russel type thing, that only lasts one year. If they pay Purdy, he's not going to be a cap issue next year. Probably not so much the year after that. I think they'll just go with youth.

Cousins might be a good QB for a team without a QB for a year. Similar to Pittsburgh.
