Knee injury?

Any of you here ever had any serious knee injuries. I was playing soccer yesterday was coming after the man with the ball from the side and I plated my foot infront of him, but when he cut back the other way I tried to, but my body went and my leg didn't. I heard to big snap in my knee. When I walk on uneven surfaces, my knee caves in from the inside.

I went to the ER last night and they think it's my PCL, and it might be torn. They said they don't so X-Rays in the ER, so I have to see an orthopedist today.

Anyone have a similar injury/symptoms? I'm praying its a bad sprain and I didn't tear anything.

What kind of cracker box hospital did you go to that they won't go X-rays in the emergency room???

You've got something torn. Sprains don't "pop". They sure in the hell don't let your knee cave in to the inside. Stay off of it until you see the doc.

I wrote that wrong. They did the X-Ray, they don't do MRIs. They said nothing is broken, but if it's my knee, its ligaments and cartilage, not bones so the X-rays are useless.

I have an appointment to see and orthopedist today.

I tore my acl and meniscus playing pick up basketball at the gym a couple years ago. Then as soon as my doctor said I could start playing again I got undercut going up for a layup and tore my meniscus again. Total of two knee surgeries. Your symptom of the knee caving in from the inside sounds like one odd my symptoms before I had surgery.

I had a nice Pop when I tore my ACL back in 1989. Those were good times.

Hope it is a minor one if it is indeed a tear.

I agree. Unfortunately it sounds like its tore.

The worst knee injury I ever had was I hyperextended my knee once playing flag football. It happened when I was running up to pull the flag off and the guy tried to cut, slipped, fell forward and went head first into my knee. The top of his head went straight into my knee cap and bent my leg back. Unfortunately my foot caught in the grass, and didn't slide backwards, so my leg just bent backwards at the knee. It hurt pretty bad and at first I was really worried I'd blown it out.

Lucky it was just hyperextended and after a few weeks the symptoms went away completely. I had to try and stay off of it as much as possible.

Based on mechanism sounds like an ACL, MCL and meniscus injury. PCL is a bit of an ususual sports injury. It can be very hard to examine acutely so often it is best to re-examine in a couple of weeks. Alternately, go straight to MRI for an earlier answer although it isn't great for detecting PCL strains.

Yep. From the description, it sounds like an ACL to me. I've had two of them, one of them in just the way you describe. PCL is a much more unusual injury.

Your knee will numb itself, by the way, and it's not a particularly painful injury anyway. But you don't have stability and it will give out when you apply unusual torque.

The resulting lack of stability means more wear and tear on your cartilage which is how you end up with meniscus problems. Most likely, you're looking at a several month recovery on a standard repair and some minor cartilage cleanup. Good news is you'll be almost as good as new when you're done if you don't mess up your meniscus in the interim.

Good call. The orthopedist said its the ACL. I'm having a MRI by the end of the week. I'm praying it's not torn.

I tore my ACL a few years back.

Went to the same doctor as the Cowboys go to. He told me to have surgery, but nobody could tell me what this was going to cost me. So I said to heck with you and never had it.

It took a while for my knee to feel better, but its fine now. I suggest you don't have the surgery. Unless they can tell you how much it will cost you.

There are some people in whom it will scar back down and provide a reasonable level of function.

For other people, they can just manage to get by knowing they have to avoid certain movements or their knee might "give out".

Some people have unpredictable instability and they definitely need the surgery.

You can always try the braces if you have mild-moderate instability and low functional demands on your knee.

I would suggest at least getting the MRI to see what else may be damaged as ACL injuries are often accompanied by other injuries as well.
