They cannot do any of this stuff, until they fix their run defense. If they are able to accomplish that, the sky is the limit. Question is, will Zimmer be here longer often to get that chance?

Fixing the run defense is largely about playing with discipline.
The LB issue is very well covered but it wasn't as if they intended to play that small last year.
They expected to have LVE and Overshown at LB with LVE coming off on passing downs.
Bell would have played a box safety role.
Zim took over the 32nd ranked defense (points allowed) when he got the job in Minny. Year 1 they improved to 11th.
In fairness they did fall back to low 20s (after being tremendous for most of his tenure) his final 2 seasons with Minny.
So its fair to both say he can rehab this thing in 1 year and say maybe he has lost the plot and is a dinosaur.

A year from now we will be hearing about how Zimmers defense didn’t work with Quinn’s players.

Then about three more failed years from now we will hear about how the next guy couldn’t make it work with Zimmers preferred personnel.

Sadly, it’s quite predictable by now.

It wouldn't surprise me if Zimmer is in line to become the team' HC next season. He was one of the coaches they were interested in but was still under contract.

No matter the personnel, coaches have to develop a scheme around their players strengths.

They don't have to become a top 5 defense against the run, just not be a total disaster in it.

Clearly their #1 priority to replacing Lve as his career looks to be over. Overshown has the skill set to play the weakside position, need to take off that third Safety with a legitimate linebacker to play on the strongside.

Then it's about fixing the DL. Is Parsons a full time DE? What about the interior? Mazi cannot be counted on to play starter reps, they need a true NT, not resigning an aging guy each season.

I expect the same, but it seems as if they are in a constant state of trying to collect players that assistants want only to change the scheme shortly after it fails.

If Zimmer is retained and promoted it’ll be a Wade situation where he is the DC also.

But absent some miracle drafts, the roster will be in decline, and Jerry won’t stick with Zimmer all that long, and here we go again.

I always figured Jerry’s last few years would be ugly, but it’s shameful they didn’t go that slight extra mile over these past few years. Missed opportunity, and for what, so they could end up in the spot they are now in cap wise? Just awful planning but this is how the kid wants to operate.

Zimmer had the Williams and then picked up Joseph when they got long in the tooth. I am pleased to see a DC that values the DT position again.

Let's see how they address the entire front 7. Right now they are extremely too light. We thought they drafted Mazi to be a 1 tech but they forced him to get smaller to play 3. Will that change? Will they add beef and a real MLB? Better believe the free agents they sign will tip their hand in how zimmer plans to run things.

Maybe we can get Marinelli to coach the DL and maybe Monty Kiffin as the LB coach. You know Zimmer will bring Campo in for an interview. Jerry and Jr. will be very comfortable.

Parsons is a full time Edge. Now Zim lives in 2005 so perhaps to him that means DE and DE alone but you aren't going to make Parsons off ball for more than change ups. He is the closest thing to LT this league has seen since LT.

At least one bigger backer is definitely key. But we've sucked drafting late R1 LBs so thats kinda scary TBH.
I'd rather sign one in FA. Can they actually get Bobby Wagner? I don't think so but he'd fit great. Josey Jewell or Patrick Queen (not big but a tackling machine) would work well too.

DL wise it is about playing 2 DTs and asking them to stop the run. DQ got too excited about the pass rush and played 2 undersized DE with DLaw an insane amount.
When teams could block that we had no idea what to do.
I'm fine with both Hankins and Mazi. They just need a 3rd dog run stuffer. Linval Joseph is 100 years old but a Zimm guy who could play 200 snaps. Javon Kinlaw and Fletcher Cox might both be options at the right price.
