Zim took over the 32nd ranked defense (points allowed) when he got the job in Minny. Year 1 they improved to 11th.
In fairness they did fall back to low 20s (after being tremendous for most of his tenure) his final 2 seasons with Minny.
So its fair to both say he can rehab this thing in 1 year and say maybe he has lost the plot and is a dinosaur.
This is basically what happened when Quinn took over from nolan lol

Quinn was a massive upgrade from Nolan. And we added Micah Parsons.
Add a top 10 NFL defender on a rookie deal and we make a similar jump next year for sure.

DQ had some issues that were beyond his control with his LB corps being shorn off at the top and an All-Pro CB going down.
But he has coached a long time and had no adjustment beyond play one more DE which only works versus bad OL.

Parsons is a full time Edge. Now Zim lives in 2005 so perhaps to him that means DE and DE alone but you aren't going to make Parsons off ball for more than change ups. He is the closest thing to LT this league has seen since LT.

At least one bigger backer is definitely key. But we've sucked drafting late R1 LBs so thats kinda scary TBH.
I'd rather sign one in FA. Can they actually get Bobby Wagner? I don't think so but he'd fit great. Josey Jewell or Patrick Queen (not big but a tackling machine) would work well too.

DL wise it is about playing 2 DTs and asking them to stop the run. DQ got too excited about the pass rush and played 2 undersized DE with DLaw an insane amount.
When teams could block that we had no idea what to do.
I'm fine with both Hankins and Mazi. They just need a 3rd dog run stuffer. Linval Joseph is 100 years old but a Zimm guy who could play 200 snaps. Javon Kinlaw and Fletcher Cox might both be options at the right price.
I disagree, he is no where the player of LT's caliber. If he wants to play full time at Edge, he must not be a major liability against the run. I don't care who they bring inside, they will continue to run right at him if he doesn't adjust his game. He must earn the right to rush the passer.

I expect the same, but it seems as if they are in a constant state of trying to collect players that assistants want only to change the scheme shortly after it fails.

If Zimmer is retained and promoted it’ll be a Wade situation where he is the DC also.

But absent some miracle drafts, the roster will be in decline, and Jerry won’t stick with Zimmer all that long, and here we go again.

I always figured Jerry’s last few years would be ugly, but it’s shameful they didn’t go that slight extra mile over these past few years. Missed opportunity, and for what, so they could end up in the spot they are now in cap wise? Just awful planning but this is how the kid wants to operate.
Don't disagree at all. The issue is, they cannot just draft and develop, that strategy doesn't work. They need to use fa and the trade market and take some chances with their cap.

They got lucky and were able to draft Lamb and Parsons lower than they should have gone.

They were able to get a couple of role player types for smaller contracts and/or compensation.

They also had a couple of nice drafts and had a window that that failed miserably because the kid can’t get over the fact that you have to overpay a little for a free agent that many teams want.

Being 2012 since they have added a major FA seems like some sort of misprint. It’s truly ridiculous.

The whole front office set up is based on a sham, so I really don’t know what I expect tbh.

Every since Stephen took over the day to day, this has been the strategy. Someone with clout needs to tell him, that just doesn't work. A bad draft class or players fail to develop. sets the team back and they do nothing to account for that.

LT is arguably the greatest of all time so sure Parsons falls short of that but LT was 237 pounds and not a run stopper.
He was great when teams ran away from him but the tact teams learned to take was running right at him.
He was very much like Parsons.

And you can make all the goofy statements you want but no Micah doesn't have to earn the right to rush the passer.
Parsons is CONSIDERABLY ahead of LT's sack pace.
LT did not reach double digit sacks until year 4.
Parsons has never NOT had a double-digit sack season with 13, 13.5 and 14.

Parsons podcast may annoy people and the team failings are what they are but his sack production is consistently great and her will earn a living as a pass rusher.
Dallas can either make him the highest paid pass rusher or someone else will.

Fixing the run defense is largely about playing with discipline.
The LB issue is very well covered but it wasn't as if they intended to play that small last year.
They expected to have LVE and Overshown at LB with LVE coming off on passing downs.
Bell would have played a box safety role.
Zim took over the 32nd ranked defense (points allowed) when he got the job in Minny. Year 1 they improved to 11th.

Woodson loved him when they got rings in Dallas. Parsons will benefit in the thoroughness that the Zimmer defense will provide for him. It will take some time to build, but not empty growth none - the - less.

______________________________

While Bell’s displacement at linebacker might be one change coming, he might slide into the team’s new strong safety spot. That’s because Jayron Kearse is likely leaving via free agency and Donovan Wilson lacks coverage skills. Remember, Bell is a converted safety and might be more effective closing in on pass catchers than he was at sifting through blockers and closing in on ball carriers. Juanyeh Thomas or even Israel “where have you gone” Mukuamu should also be in the mix for the new strong safety spot as well. Look for the Cowboys to improve their coverage capability at the safety position that extends beyond just Malik Hooker.

Bigger linebackers will help fend off offensive linemen barreling through the second level, but it would also be nice if they could get a little beef in the interior defensive line as well. The Cowboys used a first-round pick on Mazi Smith a year ago and his development will be huge in determining how much success the defense can have in the middle. But don’t be surprised if the Cowboys go even bigger with another nose tackle either through free agency or the draft as they look for someone who’s got a little extra girth.

Bill Parcells did not know Zimmer when he took over as Cowboys head coach in 2003, but it did not take him long to like him. A lot.

"He's a coach's son, and I always liked that because they lived it at the dinner table when they were young," Parcells said. "[Bill] Belichick was the same way. That's the kind of guys they were. But I got to like Mike and we've become good friends."

I live in NY and watched almost every game LT played, he was dominate in every area: pass rush, defending the run, even in pass coverage. People labeling Parsons in the same breath as LT is completely laughable. Throw out the sack comparison, it's a different game today as team's only passed about half the time when he played.

Parsons is a very good pass rusher, but he has 1 career sack in the playoffs. He stats early on compared to late in the season are drastically worse, which could suggest he shouldn't be used as a full time DE.

I'm not saying Parsons isn't an elite player in today's game, but when you chose to compare him to the best ever to play, it's not fair to Parsons. Win a Defensive MVP, hell a league MVP then he can start to be comparison. Those were things that LT accomplished plus 2 SB's.

I heard some on this board also say early in the season that this was a generational defense. That was even more crazy assumption.

Man you say some off the wall stuff
Please enlighten us how big and athletic the OL were that LT was going against at 237?

Yeah, i thought so

LT came up under Bill Parcells...right?

Zimmer got a ring and later was under Parcells as well in Dallas.

This is what is changing:

"I would say, 'Man, give him time,'" Woodson said. "He's going to be callous when he comes in. Don't be sensitive. The guy wants to win. He wants to win at all cost. He's the most competitive sumb---- I've ever met. Give him time and you'll get it. You'll understand. You're going to have to be ready. And you're going to bite him too. He's looking for the fight too. Don't back down because he's OK with it. But just have some thick skin."

The question is, will Parsons handle being coached hard not being told how great he is?

No doubt as he has to now learn leadership isn't in a press conference...or let the door hit his butt in being escorted out. As I stated last off season, he needs to become that leader, not talk it. He is still plenty young enough to learn. As a country, we are at a no turn around point...and that goes to a Cowboy linebacker also.
