Kornheiser '60 percent' sure NASCAR is fixed

Did NASCAR rig things so Dale Earnhardt Jr. could win the pole for Sunday's Daytona 500?

That's the accusation Tony Kornheiser made Tuesday on ESPN's "Pardon the Interruption."

"Someone I talked to who covered auto racing for a lot of years, said she believed there was a 60 percent chance that Junior qualified with a car not quite up to code, and people looked the other way," Kornheiser said.

Well, there you have it. Kornheiser talked to someone who's "60 percent" sure the fix is in, so it must be true. Never mind that he doesn't mention who said reporter is or offer what evidence — if any — she provided to back her claim.

Look, we get that there are conspiracy theories out there, especially when it comes to Dale Earnhardt Jr. But it's one thing for fans to espouse those theories, quite another for a journalist to do so on national television — even in a light-hearted forum like PTI — with no more proof than he talked to someone who's 60 percent sure.

Kornheiser is an idiot and proves it more and more every day.

If they did it was no good. He crashed today and has to start dead last.

^^^

I am 60% sure that he won't win this one since he is now in last.

That's just stupid of him so say to begin with.

Loved reading the guy...hate hearing him talk.

if you want to talk about the first Daytona race after his dad died when he had the only car in history that could run away from the draft and he kept having to slow down to make it look halfway fair and then think that it's the 10 year anniversary I sure it makes people wonder but if Jeff Gordon doesn't move up the track he would have won the pole.

This is ridiculous. Go away, Leprechaun.

Daytona/Talladega can easily be won from the rear though. With how the draft works, you can either bolt up front or slide to the back in the matter of 2-3 laps. In fact, I believe (not for certain) Dale Jr. has won the 500 after starting at the tail end.

NASCAR IS rigged in a way, but not by the entity itself, rather the teams...

The racing teams routinely block other cars so their team can win. Those with higher points get to "win one for the team" while the lesser drivers get to clog the track...

That is the only time I have ever questioned if a race was fixed.

I'd be lying if I said the thought didn't pop up in my head at the time, but that was during DEI's restrictor plate race heyday. They were dominant for 2-3 years at those tracks. But it wouldn't be far-fetched to believe that the driver's themselves agreed to not pressure Dale Jr. if it came down to the end.

you, me and several drivers after the race, but NASCAR shut them up pretty quick.

This has been my own personal opinion for years now.

So it's good for the sport to have the same champion for five years in a row? Doesn't make sense to me.

I guess if you want new records or whoever is doing the paying lol. Just my opinion. Between that, the ghost cautions and Dale Jrs only win in forever being when he drove a #3.

Well, I'm 100% sure he's full of crap.

There may be some who would like to help Jr. along but there are 42 other drivers who would in no way stand for it. And NASCAR is such a tight group, there would be no secret about it.

Further, I doubt Jr. would want it either.

this tandem racing is horrible, they should give two winner's trophy out

If it was Jr would you still feel the same? NASCAR has done everything they can to help him win a championship except drive the car for him.

Yes it wouldn't matter if Dale were still alive and accomplished something like that.

I was only a so-so Jr. fan but the day he signed with Hendricks he completely lost me.
