Lack of continuity = Lack of consistency

Last week the defense played lights out and Wade was the man again…get rid of Stewart…why wasn’t Wade calling the defense all along? This week the defense played well for most of the game (coverage was tight, no one running free in our secondary, little pressure on Eli, he threw a lot of very accurate balls with defenders right on the receivers early in the game, limited the running game until the 4th quarter, produced turnovers), but they were worn down in the 4th quarter thanks to the offense giving the ball to the Giants repeatedly on turnovers and once on a punt that gave them the ball on our 30. Now, it’s fire Wade again…he’s what’s wrong with our team. Blah blah blah. Worse, let's post a bunch of threads blasting a rookie CB who's still learning what it means to play in the NFL...the same rookie CB who has been playing tighter coverage than we'd been seeing from some of our starters is suddenly thrust into the starter's role, gives up on a running play in the fourth quarter, and now he's one of the ultimate, gutless, heartless culprits for this team's dire situation.

Let’s not forget that we were playing the super bowl champions who have been playing like super bowl champions on their way to a 7-1 record, and they were healthy and at full strength.

Meanwhile, our offense was playing with a backup LG who couldn’t make most teams, a one-man running game, two backup QB’s who were panicky like deer in the headlights with no mobility, an injured TE who couldn’t get his hands up to catch a big seam pass early in the game.

That’s no speed option in the backfield, and a huge liability at LG that hurt us running and passing…it’s not Proctor’s fault he sucks, but I’d have been ready to kill him had he ended Davis’s season after being de-cleated into the back of his knees. We also had to depend on a rookie TE and Curtis for most of the game.

On defense, we’re still playing with a weak front 7….but add two rookies, along with Ball and Courtney Brown and Kevin Davis, who was never supposed to be playing safety for us. The rookies are playing pretty tight coverage but Hamlin has his hands full trying to keep everyone on the same page…it’s one thing to have to look out for one rookie in the secondary, but sometimes he has 4 other DBs with little to no experience back there…and that’s not including Davis.

Come on….give them a break. No one could have guessed we’d need all those rookies playing in the secondary…thank goodness we have that depth. The front 7 are basically the same guys who got pushed around last season, but Spencer played well last night.

If we look at the entire team, offense, defense, special teams, we are lining up with a lot of guys who weren’t on the team last year, and some guys who weren’t on the team when the season started…hard to have chemistry that way.

The defense played very well in the first half, considering what the offense put them up against. They came out giving it full effort in the 3rd, but yes, some of them did quit on us in the 4th…unfortunate, but it happens. I think the coaches had this team ready to play, and they had a pretty solid gameplan…it’s not the coaches fault that the turnovers took the game out of our contol.

This team, even with Romo, would not be a very good team right now with all of the injuries and inexperienced replacements on the field at the same time, but we should have at least 1 more victory and a better effort if we had an adequate back-up QB. That’s the fault of Wade and Jason, in my opinion, but it doesn’t call for being fired.

I don’t think one season, even if we miss the playoffs, is ever reason for firing a coach. Parcells had a great first year, taking us from three straight 5-11 seasons to a 10-6 playoff birth…then it went down hill from there the next season, but he never really got the team over the hump. Wade took us to a 13-3 playoff season that ended in disappointment…we were due to have a slightly down year this year, but injuries have disrupted any chance at building on last season…we may make the playoffs, or we may very well miss the playoffs if the team doesn’t find its continuity and teamwork right away when Romo and others return after the bye week. Either way, I don’t think you fire a coach working under those adverse conditions, not even if you think he should have had a better backup QB in place.

Every year you should learn from your mistakes…playoffs or not, this off-season necessitates the following changes/additions:

1. Improve OG depth and find a starter at RG, moving Davis to RT.
2. Bring in a better backup QB or keep Bollinger and draft a QB on day 2.
3. Find a run-stuffing stud for NT and replace Canty or Spears with Ratliff…improve DE depth because most of the backups have no future as starters.
4. Draft 1-2 ILBs and one more OLB to replace Greg Ellis.
5. Bring in or draft a new SS….keep Watkins or Brown as Hamlin’s backup and get rid of the other guy.

That’s 2 OG’s, a QB, NT, DE, at least 2 LBs, & a SS. That’s 8 new players through the draft and free agency that are needed desperately. Depending on what you really think of McQ and Free, you may still be looking for at least one more OT, but if you move Davis to OT, I think you’re okay with Free and McQ as backups or replacements for Flozell if necessary.

Canty and Spears have had more chances than most starting DL-men get. Spears is playing better; Canty is playing worse….neither gives you consistent effort or production, and Ratliff needs to move out to DE permanently. Bowen and Hatcher have had their chances and are no longer giving us anything in relief…time to find other players with potential.

We cannot count on Zach Thomas long term, and you never know what you’ll get from Brady James, so it’s high time to draft a big ILB-type and move Burnette outside to back up Ware and Spencer….do something with Carpenter this offseason…play him or replace him.

Keep the Coaching staff…we had lots of injuries, lots of new guys playing on both sides of the ball, especially on defense, and a few new position coaches. This is the wrong time to make those changes…they deserve another year.

Name me a coach, any coach, who could win against the Super Bowl champs with the players we ran out on offense and defense yesterday afternoon. It was a mistake to support Garrett’s decision to keep BJ as the backup QB, but that’s not a firing offense, not even if it causes us to miss the playoffs.

That's a long post. But really there is no excuse for what Jenkins did. None. It isn't as if he made some sort of technique mistake, he flat out gave up. Inexcusable. Once a player has that attitude its difficult to change them......
